Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie is a American group formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The group draws its name from a satirical Chanson of Bonzo Doo-Dah Band, in their album Gorilla . The song in question was also played in the film of the Beatles, Magical Mystery Tour , during a Strip-tease.

Summary

Death Cab For Cutie initially was a solo project of Ben Gibbard while he was guitarist for the group Pinwheel . As a Death Cab For Cutie , it initially recorded a cassette entitled You Can Play These Songs with Chords (literally You can play these songs with agreements), surprisingly appreciated. It is at this time that Gibbard decides to found truly a complete group. It recruits Christopher Walla, which had also recorded Songs With Chords as a guitarist, Nicholas Harmer for the low one and Nathan Good like beater. The formation leaves initially Something About Airplanes , at the time of the summer 1998.

In 2000 follows We Have the Facts and We' Re Voting Yes . Nathan Good leaves the group during the recording of We Have Facts . Its contribution to The Employment Pages and Company Calls Epilog is preserved, but it is Gibbard which plays of the battery for the remainder of the album.

One hears for the first time the new beater, Michael Schorr on The Forbidden Love E.P . , going back to autumn 2000. The following, the next year, is entitled The Photo Album . The limited edition of the album contains three parts no-claims bonus, which are then gathered on The Stability E.P.

In 2003, another change of beater is necessary. Jason McGerr, of Eureka Farm , replaces Schorr. One hears it on the following album, Transatlanticism which leaves in October 2003. The album receives favorable criticisms besides and becomes the best album side sales: 225.000 copies sold during its first year. Moreover, parts of the album are played in the sound screens of The O.C , Six Feet Under , Serial fast livers , Mean Creek and in the Experts: Miami .

On his side, Ben Gibbard launches out in the electronic project The Postal Service with the exit of the first album: Give Up .

In spring 2004, the group records an album live named The John Byrd E.P. , called thus because of their engineer of sound. E.P., leaves under the label Barsuk , in March 2005, officializing their contract with them.

November 2004. Death Cab For Cutie signs a “long-term and planetary” contract with Atlantic Records, leaving Barsuk and their reputation of group Indie behind. On this subject, Gibbard affirmed that nothing was going to change except in the place of Barsuk holding one 7, there would be the letter “has” on the two sides of the small pocket of the album to come. A major change in the philosophy of Gibbard, according to which major Labels “are set to fuck you and take all your money”. A live version of the song Photobooth is on the tape announces play for Xbox 360 Project Gotham Racing 3.

At the beginning of 2006, the group announces the exit of Directions , eleven short-measurings inspired of the songs of the album Plans , each one realized by a different person. These vidéos is revealed one at the same time on the Web site of the group and a DVD is available since the April 11th 2006. ITunes Store started to sell the vidéos, formatted for IPod in March. Launch Bangs, P.R. Brown, Ace Norton, Jeffrey Brown, Lightborne, Fall de Wilde, Rob Schrab, Laurent Briet and Monkmus, as Aaron Stewart-Ahn make parties of the realizers who contributed to the project.
