Dean Barker , born the April 18th 1973 with Auckland, is a sailor New Zealand.

Biography

Having grown in the basin of Auckland, he very early discovers the sail with his father. He practices many categories before being located by Russell Coutts to take part in the Coupe of America 1995 with San Diego. He privileges his Olympic preparation and thus leaves the challenge after several months of drives. Its nonqualification for the Olympic Games of 1996 with Atlanta make it think of giving up the sail.

Russell Coutts offers a new occasion to him to prove reliable. Thus it becomes the skipper boat of drive for the Cut of America 2000. After being left victorious the first four regattas vis-a-vis the Italian challenger Luna Rossa , Russell Coutts gives up to him even the bar of TEAM New Zealand for the 5th regatta, regatta which it leaves victorious, bringing to its team the last point necessary to the defense of the trophy. After the departure of Russell Coutts, it becomes the skipper of TEAM New Zealand, having for objective to defend the trophy once again. The pressure is terrible, to make forget Russell Coutts seems a too heavy task for Barker. Moreover, the boat kiwi is structurally too fragile, from many damages even more will complicate the task of the young cox. Alinghi , which takes down its ticket to go to face TNZ out of Cut of América, very quickly includes/understands the brittleness of the “Defender”, moreover, the skipper of the Suisse trade union is not other than its former mentor Russell Coutts. This one does not leave any chance to its former team and gains the cut by 5 regattas with 0.

For the edition 2007, it is renewed in the role of skipper boat néozélandais rebatized Emirates TEAM New Zealand whose new owner is Grant Dalton.
