DeWitt Clinton (March 2nd 1769 - February 11th 1828), American politician.
Born in the area from Little Britain , in the State of New York, wire of James Clinton, it follows the courses of what became the Université Columbia. It begins its career as secretary of its uncle, George Clinton, then governor of New York. Shortly after he becomes member of the party Anti-Federalist, appointed between 1797 and 1802. Then it enters to the Sénat of the United States. Dissatisfied with the living conditions of the town of Washington DC, lately built, it leaves its armchair of senator in 1803 to become mayor of New York. It preserves this load during 3 successive mandates, 1803-07, 1808-10 and 1811-15.
In 1812 Clinton is candidate with the presidential election under the crook of the Federalists and the Republicans who were against the war with Great Britain. It is beaten by James Madison.
In the active of Clinton, one can quote the improvement of the public education system of New York, the promotion of navigation with vapor, modifications in the laws concerning criminality and the treatment of the debtors. As a governor, it is largely responsible for the construction of the Canal Érié.
In 1817 DeWitt Clinton becomes governor of the State of New York, charges that it occupies until in 1823. It supports the project of the Erié channel into convincing the deputy of the State to grant 7 million dollars for its construction. During its inauguration, in 1825, Clinton traverses all the channel, of Buffalo to the town of New York. It then empties symbolically two water barrels of the Lac Érié in the Atlantic Ocean, in a ceremonial of the " marriage of the eaux" , to celebrate the first watery connection between the east and the American west. This action for the public property and the development of the United States was however called in question when, a dozen years later, the channel was less and less used with the advent of the rail-bound transport.
Clinton died at the 59 years age. It was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in the Borough of Brooklyn in New York.
