Dayton is a city of the State of the Ohio, in the United States.

It is the seat county of Montgomery. Located at the south-west of the State, it was populated, at the time of the census of 2000, of: 166179 inhabitants. At the same date, its urban Aire grouped: 848153 inhabitants.

Geography

According to the data of the Office of the census of the United States, Dayton has a surface of 146,7 km ² (either 56,6 semi ²) including 144,5 km ² (or 55,8 semi ²) on the terrestrial surfaces and 2,2 km ² (or 0,9 semi ²) on the watery surfaces.

History

The current site of Dayton is occupied by Indians, Shawnees, when the first Europeans settle there in 1796, after many battles, in particular at the time of the war of Independence. The opening of the Miami-Érié channel, in 1829, allows the fast development of industrial fabric of the city. At the end of the years 1960 Dayton is the theater of student's big demonstrations against the racial segregation on the one hand (the Blacks represent more than 40 p. 100 of the population) and against enrôlement of young soldiers for the war of Vietnam on the other hand. It is in Dayton that the peace agreements concerning the Yugoslav conflict were signed in November 1995, on the air base of Wright-Patterson.

Economy

In the middle of a strongly industrialized area, Dayton is an economic and cultural center whose main activities are the manufacture of spare parts for auto industry and derivative products of rubber, printing works and the agroalimentary one. Research in the field of state-of-the-art technologies (aeronautics in particular) moreover is particularly developed; it is indeed in Dayton, birthplace of the Frères Wright, which place in 1903 had the first flight of an airplane been driven by a spark-ignition engine.
