Day without purchase

the day without purchase is a Manifestation Non-violente of Boycott of the purchases, to protest against the excess of Consommation. Recovery internationally by Adbusters, the operation was launched in 1992 by Canadian Ted Dave with the slogan enough is enough! (enough it is enough). The first time it was called No shop day then that was transformed into Buy nothing day .

The Journée without purchases takes place last Friday (North America) or Saturday (Europe) of November. It is the day when, in the United States, the sales figures are highest of the year.

Motivations

The organizers of this demonstration justify their action to protest against the Consumer society and what it involves: environmental pollution, exploitation of the populations or loss of the human values, influence of the Publicity which rather pushes to have than to be.

Impact

The impact of this day depends on many factors:

  • Which follows it?
  • are the purchases deferred or cancelled?
  • Y does it have sufficient awakening of the message on the Décroissance, to modify the behaviors all the year?

Future

Taking into account the debates between the organizations altermondialists, this day seems intended on a fixed date. It was often selected one day of the end of November. It is question of fixing it at November 25th, exactly a month before the festival of Christmas.

In 2006 once again, the day without purchase took place on Saturday, November 25.

In 2007, the day without purchase is planned for on Saturday, November 24.
