Day of the marmot

The day of the marmot ( Groundhog Day in English) is a celebrated Fête the February 2nd in North America which marks the end of the Hiver.

According to the tradition, this day, one must observe the entry of the burrow of a Marmotte. If Marmot emerges and sees not its shade because time is cloudy, winter will finish soon, but if the Marmotte sees its shade because time is luminous and clear, she will be frightened and will take refuge again in its hole, and the winter will continue during six weeks additional.

Certain small towns of North America have a famous marmot giving the weather, such as:

  • For 2004, the results were six weeks of winter additional for Punxsutawney Phil, Wiarton Willie, Balzac Billy, General Beauregard Lee and early spring for Shubenacadie Sam.

  • For 2006, the results are six weeks of winter additional for Punxsutawney Phil.
  • For 2007, the results are one early spring for Punxsutawney Phil.
