Dawson island

The island Dawson () is an island in the Magellan Strait who belongs to the archipelago of the Earth of Fire; it is located at 100 km in the south of the town of Punta Arenas with the Chile. Of a surface of approximately 1290 km ², this southern land end has a climate the Antarctic.

History

The Dawson island was used like Concentration camp for the Selknam and other people first at the end of the years 1800. In 1890, the Chilean government granted a concession of the island, one twenty years duration, with the missionaries Salésien S come from Italy so that they educate and adapt the natives to the modern life.

More recently, after the military Coup d'etat of 1973, the island was used like place of detention for the political prisoners. According to a report/ratio of the the international Red Cross gone back to 1974, it sheltered 99 political prisoners condemned to the forced labors and which lived under miserable conditions. The prison was closed less than one year later, and the prisoners transferred in another place from detention.
