David Rousset is a writer and French political militant born on January 18th 1912 with Roanne and died in Paris on December 13rd 1997.

Formation

David Rousset makes studies of philosophy and literature to the Sorbonne. He joined, since 1931, the socialist Students. Teacher, it approaches Trotski which it meets at the time of the stay of this one in France, and it is of this fact excluded from SFIO in 1935. The following year, it is one of the founders of the Parti working internationalist (POI). It is devoted, then with the action against the colonialism, in Algérie and with the Morocco. In 1939, he marries Susie Elisabeth Elliot, with which he will have three wire.

Deportation

During the Occupation, it takes part in the reconstitution of the clandestine POI. It is stopped, in 1943, to have undertaken a political work in direction of the soldiers of the Wehrmacht. He is tortured, imprisoned with Fresnes, then off-set with Buchenwald, then sent to the camps of Porta Westphalica and Neuengamme. In front of the projection of the Allied , it is moved with the other survivors more in North, the latter walk of dead the finished for him in the kommando of Woebbelin close to Schwerin with the moved deportees of the camp of Neuengamme. After the war, it publishes the Universe concentrationnaire , absolutely fundamental work on the Nazi camps, and in 1947 a novel on the Nazi camps, the Days of our death, based on testimonys of deportees, remelted in several characters.

The third force

It takes again its combat against the colonial wars in Indo-China and Algérie. David Rousset is one of the founders, in 1957, of the committee Maurice Audin, the name of a young communist mathematician removed and probably carried out by the French parachutists of Massu in Algeria. During the same time, it moves away from the trotskism and, with Jean-Paul Sartre, in 1948, creates the revolutionary democratic Rassemblement (RDR), left composite which wanted to join together “in the action all those which do not think that the war and totalitarianism are inevitable”. The RDR is located in a double opposition to PCF and the RPF gaullist and survives only one year: Sartre approaches PCF while David Rousset seeks a “third force”.

After the exit in 1947 of the book of Kravtchenko " I chose freedom " and of the lawsuit brought by the author with the French Letters, literary journal near to PCF, Rousset create in October 1950 the International commission against the mode concentrationnaire (CICRC), which undertakes investigations into the situations Spanish, Greek, Yugoslav and Soviet. For the first time in France, it uses the term of Gulag to indicate the Soviet system concentrationnaire. This will be worth to him to be treated of " trotskyste falsificateur" by the French Lettres with which it will bring a lawsuit that it will gain in 1951.

From 1952 to 1956, he inquires into the penitentiary situation in China and writes a “White paper”. In May 1957, the CICRC makes the examination of the policy of oppression followed in Algeria.

With the beginning of the year 1960, for various newspapers, whose “Le Figaro” and “Le Monde”, David Rousset carries out interviews of personalities of the Tiers-Monde: Nasser, Ben Bella and Che Guevara. Its support for the decolonization of Algeria by de Gaulle the conduit to support, in 1965, the candidature of this one at the time of the presidential election. It becomes a “gaullist of left”. He is elected appointed UDR of Isere, in June 1968. He moves away from the UDR after the death of the general, founds the Labor Union and finishes his mandate like independent.

International reporter to the literary Barber , he also collaborates in France-Culture, publishes the Company burst , On the war , and Fragments of autobiography .
