Career

Studying in visual arts, David Lynch tests itself very early with the cinema, devoting itself to various experiments leading to Eraserhead in 1976, film-nightmare, turned in a black and crasseux white of an astonishing audacity. It is by seeing this film except standard that Mel Brooks decides to entrust to Lynch the realization of a project which holds to him in heart, Elephant Man (1981). The film, made in a beautiful black and white, is a bright success and makes it famous (it gains the Grand Prix of the Festival of Avoriaz).

The success of Elephant Man opens the doors of the spectacular to him, with Dune (1984), adapted work of Frank Herbert, a science fiction film. The result, mitigated, division spectators. The realizer, disavows this film to him of which it did not have the final cut .

David Lynch returns in force with one of his most outstanding films: Blue Velvet (1986), which gains the Grand Prix of the Festival of Avoriaz.

With its following film, Sailor and Lula ( Wild At Heart , 1990), it is the dedication to Cannes, where it will be worth a Palme of Gold to its author.

True iconoclast, David Lynch defies any categorization, having known to create as well in its series as in its films a surrealist universe personal completion. Many of its films are played of any conventional cinematographic narration, in particular of the laws of the Black film: it is the case, in particular of its films: Twin Peaks (1992), Lost Highway (1997) or Mulholland Drive (2001). He does not hesitate either to handle certain cinematographic stereotypes in a subversive way (cf Blue Velvet , where he transforms into nightmare the idealism of the Années 1950, or in Twin Peaks, the series , which goes from the mélo to the anguish, while passing by the comedy).

In addition to his talents varied behind the camera (type-setter, assembler, mixor, decorator, organizer, producer, scenario writer, cameraman, sound engineer, realizer), David Lynch is also actor. He puts itself in scene in the series Mystères at Twin Peaks and the film éponyme, where he holds the role of the agent Gordon Cole, whose characteristic is to be deaf. He will also collaborate with other realizers such as Tina Rathborne ( Zelly and me ) (1988), Michael Almereyda , in the role of a receptionist of a mortuary in the film Nadja (1994), then recently in Midnight Movies , documentary of Stuart Samuels (2006).

a true story ( The Straight Story , 1999), whose scenario was written by his wife Mary Sweeney, is a film with share which seems more alleviated and optimist that his other productions.

In 2002 Lynch chairs the jury of the Cannes festival. It also received the chivalric insignias of the Légion of honor of France.

Its last film, INLAND WORSENS , left to France February 7th 2007, has be turned for half to Poland (in Lodz where Lynch carries out the project to create a school of cinema), for half in the United States. It is about a coproduction américano-polono-Frenchwoman.

In March 2007, the Fondation Cartier (Paris) accommodates an exposure of David Lynch, The Air Is One Fire , which gathers photographs, plastic and sound works of the realizer. This exposure is the occasion for the French to appreciate the multiple facets of Lynch, its universe disturbing and poetic public. To the varnishing of the exposure, on March 2nd, 2007, David Lynch gives in front of an audience restricts a concert of about thirty minutes with Marek Zebrowski. The two men carry out an improvisation with the synthetizers, according to writings of Lynch read between each piece, and gathered under the name of Thoughts .

October 1st, 2007, it receives the badges of Officer of the Légion of honor of the hands of the president of the French Republic in front of a floor of celebrities.
