David Lazzaretti
David Lazzaretti (1834 - 1878) is a peasant, carter, hermit and indicator Italy N.
This figure, strongly related on the local memory and revolutionary mythology, can today be apprehended within the framework of an overall research on apocalyptic prophecy at the XIXe century.
One can classify it in the series of the famous utopians, which energy of a congregation of the primitive franciscain type to a kind of third order, militate for “a communist company of work and consumption”.
Biography
It founds a religious community close to the Monte Amiata (Toscane), in the context of the unification of the Italy and the fall of the Papal States.Witness of visions, prophesying over future times, it is recognized as “holy” by the peasants of the area which it gathers around him. Presenting itself as the “large monarch” announced by prophecies which circulate then, it also attracts with him nostalgic Grand Duchy, French legitimists and priests in search of a new Messiah.
The religious authorities, confronted with a prophet resulting from the people, hesitate then end up carrying the business in front of the Holy Office. The congregation condemns the whole of its writings in July 1878.
It is killed by the police officers on August 18th, 1878.
