David Joris

David Joris is a preacher Protesting Anabaptiste Antitrinitaire and revolutionist. Jean David Joris says David Joris (known as still David Joriszoon , wire of Joris, or in Latin Ioannes Davidus Georgius ), founder of the jorists , had to flee our areas to escape the Spanish lightnings from time from Charles Quint after the publication from the edict from 1535.

The 16th century is the time when nearly a half-million Réfugié S is more than one third of the population, the Flandres leave. The family Rubens for example must flee Antwerp in Principauté of Liege because the father of Pierre-Paul had had some relations, or sympathies, for opponents with the Spanish mode. Part of the Jooris family had to make in the same way.

David Joris and the Anabaptists jorists

Contrary to the Lutherans and the calvinists, the anabaptists were opposed to any form of civil capacity. In Munster, their opposition took a frankly revolutionary turn and violent one which was choked in a blood bath in 1535. This jetta a opprobe on all the reforming movement " modéré" and the historical leaders of the Reform condemned these dissidents violently. So honnis of any share, the anabaptists were persecuted of all the religious movements at the 16th century. An edict of Charles Quint of the same year 1535 required their extermination supplements even for the anabaptists repenting or the simply suspect citizens sympathy anabaptist.

Among the anabaptists, the jorists represented the pacifist branch but at the same time they were more the zealoies and in favor of an accelerated conversion even into these disturbed times. They of this fact were particularly targeted by the Spanish capacity. In 1560, the Spanish Netherlands presented tendencies clear anabaptists in all the Flemish part of the country with a limit passing to the south of Brussels and Leuwen in extreme cases of current the the Walloon Brabant.

David actively sought Joris itself, takes the party to take refuge in Switzerland as of the beginning 1544. The jorists start to ebb towards north especially, Antwerp also and elsewhere out of the Spanish territory. However in north also, a decree taken by the Anne countess in Eastern Plank in 1545 announces that the jorists will be hung high and short if they do not leave the country immediately. On the other hand it is left the choice to the other pacifist anabaptists the “Mennistes” (Mennonites = zealoies of Menno Simons) to be understood by superintendant Plank and to abjure their convictions to be able to remain with the country.

Consequently, only in 1546 more than 30000 anabaptites were carried out in Holland and Frise. Much took refuge initially in Germany and England then from there later on with the the United States, only ground of true freedom compared to calvinist intolerance (the anabaptists emigrate at the same time as the Puritans which undergo same repression in England). Joristes were by far most important the anabaptist group at this time at the beginning. Because of exile of D. Jooris, persecutions and executions striking them in a preferential way, by the fact also of the later defection of his/her son-in-law and successor with the head of the group, the sect decreased gradually in importance then was supplanted by Mennonites.

Joristes remained however an active group in areas and in Plank until the 17th century before disappearing completely.

Life of David Joris

Born with Brussels in 1501 (according to the Large Encyclopedia - reasoned Inventory of Sciences, the Letters and Arts of XIXe S. in 31 volumes published in Paris, T. 21, p. 199), wire of a travelling changer, Jean-David Jooris becomes painter of stained glasses. It is said however sometimes originating in Bruges (in particular because of false identity which it took in its exile bâlois).

Jean (known as David) Joris is intelligent: in spite of its modest social origin, it can read and write. He quickly becomes scholar with thorough knowledge of the Scriptures and language Dutchwoman (version brabançonne). He also practices German since he will preach in German-speaking territory. He will write a very significant number of works, books and of lampoon. He also composes of the anthems, of the prayers and of the odes, let us quote inter alia Een geestelijck liedt-boecxken: Inholdende veel schoone sinrijcke Christelijcke liedekens. (Rotterdam, Dierck Mullem, C. 1590). Its principal work is Twonderboeck .

Joris will remain well-read men knowing to write and read during the later centuries.

Jean-David Joriszoon is discovered a prophetic vocation very early and in spite of its absence of specific religious training, it will preach in Germany and in the Netherlands during ten years. The situation in the south of the turbid and dangerous Brabant becoming, it leaves to settle in Delft in 1524. May 25th, 1528, it attacks there a procession of “Nieuwe Kerk” by ridiculing the Virgin Mary. He is condemned to 11 weeks of prison. He repeats at his exit of jail and on July 30th, 1528, he tackles this time a catholic procession. Like recidivist, he is condemned by the court of $the Hague to 3 years of banishment of the town of Delft. In 1533, it is quoted like one of the " twelve apôtres" envoys by J. Mathysens or Matthys, anarchistic anabaptist. The following year, David and his wife Dirkgen Willem are renamed by a catholic ex-priest Obbe Philips (or Ubbo Philips - Ubbonites) in September 1534. In March 1535, the couple must flee in Strasbourg. It returns to Delft in December 1535 for the childbirth of a second male child, David Jr. but (Jean) David Joris father must again escape in April 1536.

After the fall of Munster in June 1535, the movement anabaptist will purge its violent and revolutionary factions definitively, and will become completely pacifist under the direction of Menno Simons. This one was ordered like anabaptist of tendency melchiorite (according to Melchior Hoffman) by Ubbo Philips at the same time as Dirk Ubbo, brother of this last, like David Joris itself. February 21st, 1539, the mother of David Jooris, Maritje Jans de Gortersdochter is condemned to died and is carried out by decapitation in Delft. In 1540, Joris convenes a synod in Strasbourg to try to get along with other reformers. It will be a failure. Itself must then flee in Italy, then in Switzerland where it arrives at the beginning of 1544.

It dies there, always in exile, in Basle on August 25th, 1556 under a false identity ( Jean of Bruges or Jan von Brügge or Jan von Binningen ).

Joris became indeed meanwhile in favor of the nicodemism (i.e. to hide its convictions under agreed and conventional official appearances, while continuing to propagate its ideas and to practice its faith in secrecy, a little like Marranes at the Jews of Spain). To Basle it will thus become to the eyes of its contemporaries for a middle-class rich person zwinglist, well-known for his charitable works.

The work of David Joris

He wrote a great number of works (226) primarily religious. Most important of them is the Twonderboeck whose first edition appeared in Vianen at Dirk Mullem in 1544. The second edition goes back to 1584. It is decorated the engravings of Jerome Wierix, based on the boards of xylogravure of the first edition, chosen by Joris itself.

Joris is also the first author to be pled for the use of the language Dutchwoman as a language of culture and worship, from there its important role but ignored in the historical origin of the literature of language Dutchwoman.

Jorists

The sect of holding of Joris, the jorists (or davidists - of Jooris-aanhangers) are Anabaptistes radical unitarian antipedobaptists with communist tendency. They belong to the reformers " radicaux" arranged among the various groupings resulting from the melchiorites (Hoffman Nickel silver) about 1530 to oppose them to the Lutherans, to calvinists, to zwinglists, etc However among the melchiorites, the jorists were always fundamentally pacifist like the obbenites (Obbe Philips), but contrary with the revolutionary munsterites (Jan Matthijs, Jan van Leiden) and with the batenburgers (Jan van Batenburg) which were savage violent ones and anti-catholics. The jorists are however frankly heretics, so much so that they even will attract each other from this point of view the direct lightnings of Calvin and the reformed Church of Holland, opposed to any form of freedom of conscience, and who go until denouncing them with the Spanish Enquiry or to operate themselves the work of repression and extermination!

Calvin and its henchmen watched for by justice

in Paris in painting went to the torment:
Servet was immolé in person by Calvin;
if Servet in Geneva had been sovereign,
it had as an argument against its adversary
makes tighten of a lace the neck of the trinitaire.
Thus of Arminius the new enemies,
In Flanders étoient martyrs, in Holland torturers. "

(Voltaire, in natural Religion , 20-21)

Jean-David Joris falls under the tradition of other old heresies means-âgeuses (paulicians, cathares and Albigensian, bogomils, pétrobrusiens…) and in the mobility of pacifist anabaptists who are contemporary for him such Michel Servet burned by the calvinists, Menno Simons and others… of which there remains currently all over the world of the communities (memmonites and amish p.ex.), as well as new alternatives heretics like e.a. the Mormons, who, in first half of the 19th century, were pressurized at the same USA until having to flee in the desert of Utah. It is with this propensity with the Re-baptism (ana - baptism) that one owes all the genealogical work of the Mormons…

David Joris who always expressed pacifist feelings, opposes openly the teaching of Calvin like to the anabaptists violent one. He preaches the prayer and not the sword to bring the people to " love, peace and the unité" and that in time not suspecto, well before the fall and the repression of the revolt of Munster. However Joris - by interposed son-in-law since itself is taken refuge in Switzerland, - also will be opposed to Menno and to the other anabaptists on the fact of the need for baptizing and for organizing churches during this period of persecutions: the more wait and see and more careful mennists will excommunicate the jorists in autumn 1546. Those are found then completely isolated. As announced, in exile Joris will adopt a nicodemic attitude which will enable him to survive but in the absence of direct contacts with its partisans, its influence goes very gradually étioler.

Moreover, at the end of its life David Joris gradually will adopt a Messianic attitude. It has visions and is regarded finally as the third Messiah in the line of David and Jesus. Certain aspects of its doctrines prove also pantheist. Taken refuge in Basle since 1544, it thus adheres - under a false identity - officially to the local reformed church which is zwinglist, but it keeps secret contacts with the jorists remained in Holland who will remain active an anabaptist group until the XVIIe century, in particular in Eastern Plank. The jorist group will be constant until 1556 by the son-in-law of Joris, Nicolaas Meyndertsz van Blesdijck, friend of Sebastien Castellion, both champions of the tolerance. Meyndertsz will distanciera jorists after the revelation of the mystical and Messianic tendencies of his/her father-in-law. Later on it accepted a load of preacher in Protestant Palatinat where it dies in 1584. He told the life of his father-in-law in a book Historia vitae davidis Georgii haeresiarchae which will be published in posthumous title only in 1642.

The subterfuge of the false identity of Jan van Brugge/Jean-David Joris will be discovered by the authorities bâloises only three years after its death in 1559. Its corpse consequently will be unearthed and burned with all its books and writings (300 works of which the T Wonderboeck writes in 1542) on order of the court, on May 15th, 1559. Its family will be stopped at Pentecost 1559, will have to publicly make penitence and repentance in the cathedral of Basle.

" Calve secten, dolynghen in vremde ghesinten Die zijn in dees ballasts tyden naked opgherezen; Doen Paulus verwondert was COp die van Corinthen, Naked zoo moghen wy oock wel verwondert wesen. (...)

He then joined the Anabaptists, among whom He speedily became prominent, although He disapproved the Anabaptist insurrection At Münster (q.v.) and openly opposed Battenburg, the extreme leader off the radicals. After the fall off Münster, Joris sought to reunite the Anabaptist factions, goal his success was only temporary, and He was attacked by sectaries off all shades. One the other hand, enthusiasts called him " the hallowed off the Lord, " and proclaimed him has prophet and bringer off judgment, so that in 1536 He himself became convinced off his divine mission. At the same time He began to cuts visions, and gradually gathered butt him has circle off followers (the " Davidists ") who trusted him implicitly, even forming has distinct Anabaptist sect with has chiliastic basis. The chief centers off its activity were Oldenburg, eastern Friesland, and the Netherlands, goal after 1538 the authorities sharply opposed it, and many off its adherent were executed.

Joris himself, however, repeatedly escaped in such remarkable ways ace to give small channel to the belief that invisible He could make himself. Meanwhile He was untiring in his activity. He had already had much success among the followers off Battenburg, and for has off time among the Anabaptists Münster, goal the adherent off Hoffmann Nickel silver in Strasburg, like Johannes has Lasso and Menno Simons, rejected his overtures. The Landgrave Philip off Hesse, off the other hand, granted him protection one condition off his accepting the Augsburg Confession. His unceasing personal propaganda was aided by his numerous writings, off which the most important was his " you Wonderboeck " , (Deventer, 1542), jumbled farmhouse has off fantasy, mystery, and allegory.

With the amassing off wealth from his adherent and to despair gaining off has great following, has off new period began in the career Joris. He was accepted ace has citizen, led year irreproachable religious life, was conspicuous for his charities, and acquired considerable property, including has small castle At Binningen. His propaganda was now restricted to writing mystic treatises and epistles to his followers, whom He urged to conform externally to the existing Church. One the other hand, He was in touch with opponents off the dominating Church, pleading for Servetua in year anonymous petition off 1553, writing to Schwenekfeld (though He opposed his deification off the humanity off Christ), and being acquainted with Castellio. The identity off " John off Bruges " with the Dutch Anabaptist Jan David Joris was not discovered until three years after his death and burial. In Apr., 1559, the University off Basel condemned Joris ace heretic and there is May 13 his body was exhumed and burned, together with his books and portrait.
