David Gilmour

David Jon Gilmour , musician British, born the March 6th 1946 in Grantchester, close to Cambridge, is the guitarist, singer and one of the type-setters of the group Pink Floyd.

Course

David Gilmour joined the group Pink Floyd in January 1968, in order to support on scene the singer-guitarist Syd Barrett, a friend of childhood with which it started to play of the guitar, whose behavior becomes increasingly erratic. In April 1968, David Gilmour ends up definitively replacing Syd Barrett which, victim of mental disorders, became unable to play and to follow the group.

He will become one of the major factors of the success of Pink Floyd at the end of the years 1960 and the years 1970 by his quality of play to the guitar, and by his song.

To the album The Wall (1979), Gilmour alternates primarily the compositions and the parts of song of the group with the bass player Roger Waters. The role of this last will become increasingly dominating until their rupture in 1985. Gilmour takes the orders of Pink Floyd then, while Roger Waters engages a legal battle to prevent the use of the name of Pink Floyd for the exit of the album has off Momentary Lapse Reason in 1987; it loses the lawsuit.

The enmity between Roger Toilets and David Gilmour remains strong and famous until, at the request of Bob Geldof, they accept a reformation of Pink Floyd for the London concert of the Live 8 in 2005. This concert is the occasion to see and hear the group play as the more beautiful days during nearly half an hour. Nevertheless, after this concert, Gilmour always contradicted the rumors of reformation of Pink Floyd with Waters.

Since the album Beautiful The Division in 1994 and the great round which followed, David Gilmour lives primarily into reprocessed with his wife Polly Samson and their children. It however makes in 2002 a small number of concerts semi-acoustics, accompanied by some musicians and a chorus. It also takes part as musician of session, producer or sound engineer to various albums and concerts.

In March 2006, One Year Island , new the opus solo of David is born. The two faithful accomplices Rick Wright (Pink Floyd) and Robert Wyatt (ex- Software Machine) take part in the album. The album is at the head charts in many countries, thus confirming its popularity. An international round follows and a double live DVD entitled Remember that Night - Live At the Royal Albert Hall is marketed since September 17th, 2007.

David Gilmour knew to create and develop one phrased musical single recognizable with the first note: fluidity of the play, precision in the choice of the improvisations, dramaturgy of the minor mode… Having a very personal technique and an inspiration, it underlines its interventions of a rich and coloured sound pallet. With its style very blues but also by with dimensions éthéré it invented a new sound. It also attaches an enormous importance to sound research, in particular by the use of a great number of effects and material. It is thus in the beginning, with Rick Wright with the keyboards, of the sound of Pink Floyd as developed as of, primarily, the Echoes song.
