The Drapeau of the South Korea is named the Taegeukgi . It is Blanc struck of a Taijitu (symbol of the Yin Yang, whose Korean equivalent is Um Yang) red (above) and Bleu (below), this one being named Taeguk and meaning the origin of any thing in the universe. Along the four diagonals, four are laid out trigram S of the Livre of the Changes representing the four elements: ground, sky, fire and water. Each symbol has its complementary (Air/Ground, Feu/Eau, yin/yang). It is thus the idea of universal harmony which guided the design of the flag.

  • Geon (☰) = 하늘 (天) = haneul (air), in top on the left

  • Li (☲) = 불 (火) = bulldozer (fire), bellow on the left
  • Gam (☵) = 물 (水) = mul (water), in top on the right
  • Gon (☷) = 땅 (地) = ttang (ground), bellow on the right

Created by 박영효 (Park Yeonghyo) in August 1882 under the reign of King Gojong of the Joseon dynasty. It becomes official the March 6th 1948, but the exact specifications were established the October 15th 1945.
