Synopsis
Antoine (Jean-Pierre Léaud) and Christine (Claude Jade) have been married for 8 years. Christine gives courses of violin to the Academy, Antoine wrote a novel. Liliane (Dani) becomes the new pupil and friend of Christine. Antoine likes to read novels of Colette. Then he sees lesbians everywhere: “In your place I would pay attention”, says it to Christine. Finally it is with Liliane that it will mislead Christine. And Antoine gives an explanation which resembles to him with hundred percent. He had offered a book to Liliane and the following day he saw that to protect this book, she had covered it with newspaper. It was moved so much that at once it slept with her. “It needs a woman, a mistress, a little sister or a nurse, a nurse and me I feel incable to play all the parts at the same time”, declares Liliane with Christine by explaining his rupture with Antoine.One year passes. Christine recalls to Antoine that they divorce today and that their Alphonse son, share in class of sea the evening even. Christine, occupied to the academy, cannot lead Alphonse (Julien Dubois) to the train, it asks Antoine to do it. In a taxi Antoine and Christine remember their common past when they exchanged the stolen Baisers , then their cohabitation in the marital Home . Antoine and Christine Doinel are the first couple to divorce by mutual assent. The journalists pose heaps of questions to the ex-husbands. At the station, Antoine meets Colette (Marie-France Pisier), lawyer, and platonic ex-love. Antoine speaks about his life with Christine and his next novel: it is about an individual, with the basement of a bar, breaking with a woman on the telephone. In one moment of anger it tears its photograph, hangs up again and from goes away. Another man collects the pieces scatter in the phone box and reconstitutes the photograph. In love with the recomposed face, the man leaves to research the original. In fact it is the proper history of Antoine and the beginning of his adventure with Sabine Barnerias (Dorothée). Antoine jumps of the train and Colette finds in her compartment the reconstituted photograph. She deciphers with the back a name: Barnerias. It is that of his/her friend Xavier (Daniel Mesguich). Sabine would be the hidden wife of her lover? Colette goes to Sabine and crosses Christine in the staircase. Christine is as a mission leader. Christine speaks with Colette on Antoine. Christine declares that Sabine is the young sister of Xavier. Colette gives the photo one has Christine and Christine returns the photo Antoine, who gives the photo one has Sabine.

One of the originalities of this film comes from its flash-backs. Indeed, different the flash-backs from the life of Antoine Doinel are scenes of preceding films of François Truffaut, of which some had been cut to the assembly.
