They are plants herbaceous or “arborescent”, rhizomateuses, arid regions of Australia.
The phylogenetic classification locates the divergence of this family at the level of the Commelinidées.
In traditional Classification this family does not exist: cettes plants is assigned with the Xanthorrhoeacées.
This family is brought by certain authors closer to the Lomandracées.
