Dashan

Dashan (大山, pinyin: Dàshān, reads. " Large Montagne") (born in 1965 with Ottawa in the Ontario) of scene Chinese is the name adopted by the Canadian Mark Rowswell which works as an artist in China. Dashan is perhaps the most known Westerner in China, whereas it is almost unknown in Occident.

History

Education

Rowswell began its studies from Chinese to the Université of Toronto in 1984. The Chinese name that its professor had allotted to him was then Lu Shiwei (路世伟). After having obtained its diploma in 1988, Rowswell accepted a purse to continue its Chinese studies to the Université of Beijing.

First appearance on television

Rowswell made its first appearance on television Chinese in order to accommodate an international competition of song in November 1988. The next month, it was invited to play in a comedy on the national television channel CCTV at the time of its official reception for the new year, programs whose audience is estimated at 550 million people.

An accidental celebrity?

Because of the sudden aspect of the rise of its popularity, Dashan was called a " celebrity accidentelle". However, the longevity of which it makes proof after more than 20 years tends to suggest that it is not a question of a simple accident. Many foreigners appear regularly on television in China and the foreigners who usually speak the Chinese are also rare only at the time but none foreign still reached the level of popularity which Dashan in China knows.
