Darmstadt
City of the Land (State-area) of Hesse in Germany, Darmstadt is called by the Ministry of Hesse since 1997 “Wissenschaftstadt Darmstadt”, i.e. “Darmstadt, the city of Science”. It is twinned at 15 European cities and a turque.
Darmstadt and the seat of its administrative unit is located in the south of the area of Hesse. The city belongs to one of the nine higher centers of the Land of Hesse and the area of the Rhine. Darmstadt is
fourth city of the Land of Hesse
after Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Kassel.
The city privileges also art and the culture, by developing works of the Jugendstil or Art nouveau of the Colony of artists founded in 1899 by the Large-Duke Ernst Ludwig with the Mathildenhöhe.
Situation
A good transport infrastructure serves the city which is in the middle of what one names “the blue Banana” European, i.e. the great industrial area between London and Rome.The closest big cities are Frankfurt (approximately 30 km in north), Mannheim (approximately 45 km in the south) and Heidelberg.
“City of Science”
Its title of “City of Science” is due to the presence of the technical university (YOU Darmstadt) founded in 1877, of two higher technical training schools, like at institutes or organization related to research: center technology and of innovation (TIZ), Chambre of Sciences and Congresses called Darmstadtium , ESOC, EUMETSAT, the company of research on the heavy ions (GSI), etcA study on the technological level proves that the area of Starkenburg occupies the 3rd place among the 97 areas of Germany, after those of Munich and Stuttgart.
120 scientific companies were founded in Darmstadt in 1999.
History
Darmstadt belongs to the Land of Hesse since 1479. It becomes the capital of the princes of Hesse-Darmstadt starting from 1567 during the creation of Landgraviat of Hesse-Darmstadt formed after the death of Philippe Ier Magnanime. Part of the possessions of Philippe Ier Magnanime were yielded (Hesse-Cassel, Hesse-Marbourg, Hesse-Rheinfels, Hesse-Darmstadt and Dietz). Between 1618 and 1648, Darmstadt underwent the consequences of the Thirty year old War. In 1635, many people died because of the plague. In 1668, Friedrich Jacob Merck repurchased the Engel pharmacy which it called Merck KGaA. In 1771, the countess named Caroline Große Landgräfin and Johann Heinrich Merck of the Merck family brought together authors and type-setters to form the Circle of Romantic ( Kreis der Empfindsamen ) of which Goethe , Herder and Klopstock formed part. In 1806, after the disappearance of the Germanic Empire, the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt becomes Grand-duché of Hesse-Darmstadt. The Large Duke of Hesse received an important financial contribution for the constitution of Darmstadt on December 12th, 1820.In 1835, the son of a doctor of Darmstadt, Georg Büchner which was recognized as an author after his death, was exiled in Strasbourg because of his revolutionary activities. Today, the price of language and literature entitled Georg Büchner is decreed with the participation of the Academy of language and literature and of the Municipal council. In 1836, a vocational school was opened, become today the school of sciences applied. The theater of Darmstadt was a certain success, in the years 1960 pennies the direction of Rudolf Sellner. Printing works and the edition reinforced the economy of the city during the XXe century. In 1844, the monument Ludwig Langer was built on the place Louise ( Luisenplat ), with the statue of Ernst Ludwig. In 1886, the tram with a steam engine was put in circulation. It establishes the link between the center town of Darmstadt and the cities Eberstadt, Arheiligen and Griesheim. Between 1898 and 1908, the Large Duke Ernst Ludwig named seven artists to create the Colony of artists to the Mathildenhöhe. His/her sister Alexandra of Hesse-Darmstadt married the Russian Tsar Nicolas II. The Art nouveau ( Jugendstil ) of the Colony of artists was a capital element of art like was to it then the Bauhaus .
Darmstadt counted: 72000 inhabitants in 1900. At the end of the Second world war, the old city was completely destroyed. More: 11000 people died in one night. Darmstadt had to return the title of capital of Hesse in Wiesbaden. The city was mainly renovated and rebuilt. New buildings were created beside the reconstituted historic buildings.
Economy
Approximately 100.000 work stations are offered for 138.000 inhabitants. In the Western zone of the city, one created a new space which aims at developing the trade, technology and the services. The head offices of the Telekom subsidiary company were established in this geographical area. Two European centers of space operations are in this sector: the ESOC or ESA and EUMETSAT. The various administrative offices of the city are responsible for economic promotion (distribution of booklets for example) and they allow the bonds between the companies and the establishments of research.

Culture, sports and leisures
The Cybernarium is a technological center of adventure which represents a virtual world. It is opened to the public, in order to discover various designs of science and technology.Many cultural establishments were created in Darmstadt and the German Academy of language and literature decrees every year the price Georg Büchner, with the participation of the municipal council of Darmstadt. On the musical level also, Darmstadt, which organizes every two years the International Conference for the New Music.
These last years, the center town of Darmstadt was rehabilitated. The Carree is a space made up of Coffee terraces and many stores. The Luisen Center is a shopping mall on several stages.
The city profits from important means in order to be able to set up sports events each year. Various cultural activities are also practiced thanks to associations coeds, in particular the courses of song with the choral society of the university YOU Orchester.
