Darkthrone is one of the first groups of Black Norwegian metal and also one of most influential.

History

The group was formed in 1986 with Kolbotn under the name of Black Death . Darkthrone begins as a group from Death metal with the album Soulside Journey .

Following Soulside Journey , Darkthrone is one of the first Norwegian groups to make use of “Corpse Paint”, in homage to Venom , group creative of the album Black Metal , at the origin of the philosophy of the kind, which themselves used the “corpse Paint”

Under the influence of Euronymous which made them discover Worship Him Samael, Darkthrone gives up Death metal definitively and leaves legendary the has Blaze in the Northern Sky in 1991. Deliberately awkward, simplistic, and inscrutable, has Blaze in the Northern Sky illustrates the weight of simple the Nihilisme while parodying of old musical styles through a sinister choral society where the singer delivers an uncontrolled flood of words, with the music which follows. Darkthrone leaves then its third album, Under has Funeral Moon , even dirtier side production than the precedent. The sound recording and the front S even further push the limits of the black metal of the time.

In 1994, Darkthrone leaves an album which will make date in the history of Black metal: Transilvanian Hunger , always characteristic of the Darkthrone style, namely with the minimalist production. Varg Vikernes of Burzum, writes several texts for this album (before being imprisoned in 1993) but it is especially a sentence with the back of the album which will make scandal: “Norsk Arisk Black Metal”, which means “Black Metal Norwegian and Aryan”. This sentence will be withdrawn later from the album by Peaceville. Darkthrone becomes, thanks to this album, one of the emblematic legends of the True black metal. The new album of Darkthrone quickly leaves after, in 1995, Panzerfaust , nearer to their influences Celtic Frost/Hellhammer. The album contains the first slower parts of Darkthrone, like Quintessence or The Hordes off Nebulah . Zephyrous then decides to leave the group, and Darkthrone composes Total Death in 1996, which him approaches more environment of its first two albums black. This album has words written by famous members of the Norwegian scene (Garm, Ihsahn, Satyr and Carl-Michael Eide). In 1999, after 2 years of absence, Darkthrone returns with a new album, Ravishing Grimness . Then in 2001 with Plaguewielder and in 2003 with Haste Them . At this time, the Black metal of Darkthrone starts to take a turning slightly Punk. In 2004 comes Sardonic Wrath which seems to be the last album of Darkthrone on the label Moonfog Production (property of Satyr of Satyricon). Returned on the label Peaceville, Darkthrone leaves in 2006 The Cult is Alive , which pushes the evolution even further towards a black metal more close to the punk one.

In 2007, this evolution continues with the exit in October of F.O.A.D. The album mixes with the black metal much punk influences, rock'n'roll roll and heavy metal.
