History
The name of Dardilly would come from Dardiliacus which would have based Dardilly at the time Gallo-Roman - but not historical proof on this assumption, although one found the traces of a Aqueduc builds by the Emperor Claude to bring water of the Brévenne (affluent of the Azergues, itself flow of the the Saone) to Lyon. Actually the name of Dardilly is reproduced for the first time in the 10th century on the Cartulaire of Ainay; indeed, the Abbey of Ainay had several grounds here. With the the Middle Ages, the Village, built on a hillock, was composed of a church, a Cimetière contiguous to this church and of a score of houses. In 1210, at the time of the feudal wars, the Count de Beaujeu tried to seize the town of Lyon. The Archbishop of the time, Renaud II of Drill, to defend its city, strengthened Dardilly while creating around the village existing a wall surrounded by a ditch. It was " the château". The church was dedicated to Saint Pancrace. At the time of Jean-Marie Vianney, at the 19th century and the beginning of XXe, Dardilly was a village in agricultural and wine matter, with some beautiful houses built by Lyoneses who came to spend the summer months there. The population was approximately 1500 inhabitants. At the end of the 19th century the Vigne was devastated by the Phylloxéra. Many dardillois left to Lyon, where they found work. The population had fallen to 982 inhabitants in 1911. The wine growers who had remained on the spot are converted with the fruit-bearing culture.-
1986 : The Pape Jean-Paul II goes to Dardilly to visit the native house of the Curé of Ars at the time of the Bicentenaire of its birth.
