Daphnis (S XXXV Daphnis) is a Natural satellite of the Planet Saturn.

Discovered

The discovery of Daphnis was announced by Carolyn C. Porco and equips it Cassini Imaging Science TEAM on May 6th, 2005, starting from six images taken by the probe Cassini over one 16 minutes period on May 1st, forming an animation of angular small stereotypes of 0,180 S each one, aiming at the edge external of the Anneau has of Saturne . The satellite was then retroactively observed on 32 images of the Anneau F taken on April 13rd (over one 18 minutes period) and also on two images with high-resolution (3,54 km Pixel) taken on May 2nd, over which its disc of 7 km is visible. One had previously deduced his existence from the gravitational undulations observed on the edge external of the Division of Keeler: Daphnis indeed produces kinds of waves in the ring.

The satellite bears the name of Daphnis   , a shepherd, player of panpipes and pastoral poet of the Greek Mythology. Daphnis was one of wire of Hermes, the brother of Pan and a descendant of the Titans.

Characteristics

Daphnis is a Satellite shepherd from approximately 6 to 8 km in diameter and orbit in the Division of Keeler (width: 42 km) of the Anneau have; its Equatorial radius is probably equal to 136.505 km, which makes it possible to estimate its period of revolution at 0,595 37 days. The available data do not make it possible to estimate its Inclinaison nor its eccentricity, although these two parameters are extremely probably very close to zero. One estimates his Albédo at 50%.
