Daniyal Akhmetov
Daniyal Kenjetaievitch Akhmetov (June 15th 1954, Pavlodar -) [[Kazakh] cyrillized: ДaниялКенжетaйұлыАхметов and into Kazakh Latinized, Danïyal Kenjetayulı Axmetov] is a Kazakh politician and Prime Minister of the République of Kazakhstan of June 2003 with the January 8th 2007. Minister for Defense since the January 10th 2007.
Akhmetov belongs to the Russian minority of the country. It is graduate industrial Institute of Pavlodar, before receiving a doctorate in economic scenes. He is governor ( akim ) of the oblast of Pavlodar in 2001, in the North of the country, where concentrates the Russian minority. Akhmetov becomes then Deputy Prime Minister of Imangali Tasmagambetov. Following the failure of the land reforms of Tasmagambetov, Akhmetov is named Prime Minister the June 13rd 2003.
If the government of Akhmetov succeeded in stabilizing and even revalorizing the Tenge (the Kazakh currency) vis-a-vis the dollar, it is at the price of a still high inflation. At the beginning of June 2005, the committee bugétaire of the Parliament kazakhe revealed the diversion of 31 billion tenge planned for the achievements of “social infrastructures” of the government like the construction of roads and residences.
Confirmed to its station the January 18th 2006 after the re-election of the president Noursoultan Nazarbaïev, it gave however its resignation the January 8th 2007 and was replaced by the Deputy Prime Minister Karim Massimov. It was appointed Minister for Defense in the new government, becoming thus the first civilian to take up this duty since the independence of Kazakhstan.
