Danielle Casanova

Danielle Casanova (born Vincentella Perini with Ajaccio (Corsica) on January 9th 1909 - Auschwitz, May 9th 1943) was militant a communist and a resistant , died in deportation with Auschwitz. It was responsible for the Communist youths, before founding the Union of the young girls of France.

Childhood and youth

Girl of teachers, Vincentella Perini continues her secondary studies with Ajaccio then with the college of the Luc (Var) where it follows one of her professors. After a short passage in preparatory class, it is registered at the dental school of Paris, preferring a liberal profession with the public office. She discovers there the Federal union of the students, organization coed of left to which she adheres before becoming responsible about it. She meets her husband, Laurent Casanova, within this organization. In 1928, it engages in the Communist youths.

Political activity of the inter-war period

Vincentella is then made call Danielle and very quickly becomes secretary of the group of the medical college. While continuing its studies, it joined the Central committee of the movement in VIIe congress in June 1932, then the direction of the movement in February 1934, where it is the only woman. Vis-a-vis the very fast increase in manpower of the JC, VIIIe congress at this meeting in Marseilles in 1936 the responsibility of found the Union of the young girls of France. This organization, although near to the JC, has vocation to create a pacifist movement of young girls and antifascist. Elected general secretary of the UJFF at the time of its first congress in December 1936, it in addition organizes an action of collection of Condensed milk to help the children of Spain victims of the civil war.

Resistance

During the prohibition of the PCF in September 1939, Danielle Casanova passes in clandestinity, and contributes to the newspaper the Hyphen . As from October 1940, it takes part in the installation of the female Committees in Paris region. While continuing to contribute to the clandestine press, in particular for the free Thought and by melting the Voice of the women , it organizes demonstrations against the occupant, in particular the manifestations of the 8 and November 11th 1940 caused by the arrest of the professor Paul Langevin, then that of July 14th 1941.

It is stopped by the French police force on February 15th 1942 whereas it supplied Georges Politzer and his wife. Imprisoned with the Prison of Health then at the height of Romainville at the end of August 1942, it is off-set with Auschwitz on January 24th 1943 where it is useful in the infirmary of the camp as a dental surgeon. It never ceases militating, organizing clandestine publications and demonstrations with the deposit, then at the height, and finally solidarity in the concentration camp. She dies the evening of May 9th, 1943 of the Typhus.

Posthumous fame

Heroin of Resistance, of many streets, schools, colleges and colleges were baptized of its name after the Release, in particular in much communes won over to the Communist party, but also to Paris. One of the ferries of SNCM, connecting Marseilles and the Corsica , was also baptized Danielle Casanova .
