A family of merchants of art

Daniel Wildenstein was born in a family from amateurs from Article His grandfather Nathan Wildenstein, wire of a rabbi, was born with Fegersheim, in Alsace, in 1852, had started to sell paintings of the 18th century in the Années 1870, initially in Carcassonne then with Paris, street Boétie. Nathan dies in 1934, leaving the heritage to his/her son Georges (1892-1963) who will transmit it to Daniel. This one had two wire, Alec, (born in Marseilles in 1940, whose divorce with his Jocelyn wife, supplied the tabloid press) and Guy, (néen 1945 in the United States) which direct the family company today. A delicate business of succession putting at the catches two wire and the widow of Daniel, Sylvia, has defrayed the international fashionable chronicle for several years

An international history

At the beginning of the 20th century century, Wildenstein & Co are established with New York and London. Daniel Wildenstein studies with the Sorbonne and begins his career like person in charge of the public demonstrations from the Musée Jacquemart-Andre, in Paris, and the Museum of the Abbey of Chaalis, in forest of Ermenonville. Among the exposures which it caused, let us quote: Drawings and manuscripts of Léonard de Vinci , Second Empire of Winterhalter in Renoir , Victor Louis in Warsaw and Masterpieces of Toulouse-Lautrec .

A fabulous collection

From 1963 to 2001, it directs the Gazette of the Art schools, worthy institution created one century earlier and pertaining to its family since about thirty years. The prestigious review disappeared in 2002. In the same register, Wildenstein creates with his/her sister Miriam Pereire, in 1970, a foundation of history of art, the Wildenstein Institute , which publishes the reasoned catalog of many artists, of which the complete catalog of works of Claude Monet, and who is today still a documentary center of history of the art of very first plan, with more 400  000 works. In the Years 1960, Wildenstein had closed its Parisian offices and fact of New York the general headquarter of its trade.

In 1971, it enters like free member to the Académie of the fine arts to the armchair number III.

Wildenstein had an extraordinary collection of paintings of the Masters of the Impressionnisme although it was not limited to this period. In 1978, its “treasure” in particular consists of 20 Renoir, 25 Courbet, 10 Van Gogh, 10 Cézanne, 10 Gauguin, 2 Botticelli, 8 Rembrandt, 8 Rubens, 9 Greco, 5 Tintoret, and a great quantity of Bonnard recovered by defending the children of Bonnard against the family of fire Mrs. Bonnard whose they were unaware of the existence, around her succession, is in all approximately 10  000 paintings.

In 1981, it makes donation with the Musée Marmottan of a collection of more than 200 Enluminure S gathered by his/her father Georges Wildenstein.

Racing

Impassioned Equestrian sport, Daniel Wildenstein invests as well in the horses of dish as of trot. Its famous casaque blue gains four times the Prix of the Triumphal arch (flat) but also twice the Prix of America (trot).

Impassioned by arts, its horses of dish have names such as Allez France, Peintre Celebrates, Aquarelliste, Claude Monet, Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, Seurat or Goodbye Charlie (in reference at the beginning of the Général de Gaulle of the businesses). For trot, most famous are Cocktail Jet and Kesaco Phedo.

In 2002, the Prix of the Round Not was famous Prix Daniel Wildenstein.

Last years

In 1993, Pace Gallery and Wildenstein create the subsidiary company PaceWildenstein , gallery of Manhattan specialized in the contemporary art. The end of the lifetime of Daniel Wildenstein is marked by many polemics and by lawsuits, those brought by the owners of works of Modigliani or Van Dongen excluded from the catalogs reasoned published by Wildenstein Institute, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, those of Jewish families dispossessed of their works of art by the Germans during the war and showing the Wildenstein family to have collaborated with the Nazi regime in their depend.

Daniel Wildenstein is not a historian of the art of the more banals. Having with personal capacity more works than many museums, he was a warned business man, but also a not very miserly scholar of his knowledge.
