Biography

In his youth, Daniel Schneidermann was militant with the political organization French coed Union of the communist students. After being last with the Training center of the journalists, it enters in 1979 as journalist to the French daily newspaper Le Monde , where it is named international reporter in 1983. In 1992, it starts to present to it chronicles of television, initially daily. It criticizes there the way in which television presents the Information and influences the spectator. It falls under the continuity of started televisual criticism thirty years earlier by authors like François Mauriac or Morvan Lebesque (see on this subject the work the critical Eye - the critical journalist of television of Jerome Bourdon and Jean-Michel Frodon).

In 1995, on a common idea with Arnaud Viviant and Pierre Carles, the success of its written chronicles enables him to create on France 5 (then named the Fifth and chaired by Jean-Marie Cavada) the weekly emission Freeze frame , of which he is at the same time producer and organizer. The journalist Pascale Clark presented the emission with him during the first year. Freeze frame has the aim of deciphering the televisual image and speech and, with the assistance of various chroniclers and journalists, to analyze the drifts and successes of the media account. The Freedom of expression of Freeze frame is proposed by the chain France 5. But, in spite of audiences being able to reach 1,5 million televiewers, it however preferred to remove any repeat broadcast with the appearance of the Digital terrestrial television.

This emission, which is rare for French television, tries to organize its Autocritique in relation to Internet. Each month, the “forumancière” charged to follow the debates of the televiewers on the forum of Freeze frame , comes to challenge Daniel Schneidermann on some critical emitted by Net surfers contributing to this site.

Since 2002, Daniel Schneidermann is confronted with difficult relations with the chain TF1. This situation makes following the presence on the plate of Freeze frame of a former correspondent of TF1, Alain Chaillou it expresses his surprise and its disappointment to be sanctioned by a newspaper which however wants to be a model of transparency. He becomes chronicler of the media then, every Friday, in the newspaper Libération , daily newspaper at which he had scoffed the director Serge July in 1989 in his book Where are the cameras? , in particular reproaching him for having changed his/her colors .

Daniel Schneidermann also expresses interest for the analysis of Internet like information source, in particular through the development of the Blog S and Wikipédia, of which it is very critical. In 2005, with David Abiker and Judith Bernard, it creates the Big Bang Blog; this blog also enables him to express ideas which would not have their place in his chronicles or its television programs, as to speak about “all that cracks and all that resists” in the world of the media. In one of the texts of this blog, he in general denounces the anonymity of the authors of notes of Wikipedia, and this one in particular.

July 6th, 2005, Patrick de Carolis is elected president of France Televisions by the Superior council of audio-visual the (SCUMS). Daniel Schneidermann recalls then on his Blog that its new leader presented in the emission roots and wings , a falsified report, presenting a drive of the republican Compagnie of safety (CRS) like a report taken on the sharp one. By this act, he explains to want to check the space of my oxygen bubble not to renew the emission Freeze frame with the re-entry of September 2007. Daniel Schneidermann is laid off of France 5 on June 30th, 2007 for “serious error”.

He creates in September 2007, with the whole of the editorial team of the emission, a Web site @rrêt on images whose objective is to continue the criticism already related by the emission but to a completely free support. Its financial plan does not rest on the combination between free access and advertizing financing, which he regards as nonviable, but on a paying subscription. He thus hopes for fidéliser the 180.000 signatories of the petition against the suppression of the emission Freeze frame .

Polemics

Daniel Schneidermann, critical of the media, did itself the object of several polemics, either with personal capacity, or because of his emission Freeze frame .

Pierre Bourdieu

An emission of Freeze frame , on January 20th, 1996, was the polemic object with the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, invited to the sides of the journalists Jean-Marie Cavada and Guillaume Durand. Pierre Bourdieu estimated that the emission had not really enabled him to be expressed and confirmed its former idea which “one cannot criticize television on television”, which Daniel Schneidermann regarded in return as an ignorance of the televisual mechanisms. In 1996, Bourdieu publishes the book On television , whereas Schneidermann makes appear in 1999 journalism after Bourdieu .

The film Finally taken of the journalist Pierre Carles, in favor of collaborator Bourdieu and transitory of Daniel Schneidermann, has as a central figure this last, which he suspects of partiality and disavowal. It is based in particular on images of the emission with Pierre Bourdieu and indicates that, later, the chairman of Vivendi Jean-Marie Messier was invited only in an emission of Freeze frame whereas Daniel Schneidermann proposed in Bourdieu to come on his plate only in the condition which it accepts of the contradictors. Dialog of the deaf , delivers recalling the epistolary correspondence between Daniel Schneidermann and Pierre Carles between 1997 and 2000 will leave in 2007 in the edition box DVD this film.

Dismissal of the World

At the time of the controversy around the book the Hidden side of the World of Pierre Péan and Philippe Cohen, Daniel Schneidermann criticized in his work the media Nightmare the reaction of the direction of the daily newspaper, by estimating that this one did not answer the arguments of the book. The leaders of the Monde laid off it in October 2003 for “real cause and serious”: according to them, a passage of the book of Daniel Schneidermann was “attentatoire with the company for which he works”. The journalist continued the daily newspaper with the conciliation board of Paris, which gave him win in May 2005. Le Monde made call of this decision.

In opposite direction, Daniel Schneidermann laid off in 2003 an employee freelance journalist of Freeze frame and stimulating of the forum Internet, which it reproached a contrary behavior the principles of the emission. This dismissal was condemned like abusive because deprived of real cause and serious by the conciliation boards on May 20th, 2005.

Charges of plagiarism

Daniel Schneidermann published in 2000 the Madnesses of Internet , delivers which took again a series of articles published during the summer in Le Monde . He was shown of plagiarism by several authors of Web sites of which he had used the writings without quoting the source.

Daniel Schneidermann admitted being alerted subject by this site but carried out his own investigation thereafter. He promised that the sites would be quoted in the collection complete of the chronicles and declared that the decision not to quote the sites was made by Le Monde to shorten the chronicles.

Charges of censure

Since its dismissal of the newspaper Le Monde in 2003, Daniel Schneidermann on several times the occasion to criticize in writing that which was its hierarchically superior, Edwy Plenel. Last episode in date: October 15th, 2006, it gives an opinion in Big Bang Blog against the revival project of its former owner for the newspaper Libération . It does not fail to remind that Edwy Plenel “had been announced by censuring, the marble, an article of the mediator of the Monde ”. The relations between the two men were however not always also conflict. In 1996, a report on the driver of Jacques Chirac (carried out by Pierre Carles on behalf of the Franco-Belgian emission Striptease on France 3) is déprogrammé by Jean-Pierre Elkabach, then chairman of France Televisions. Fabienne Darge, journalist with the Monde , which already reported in the columns of its newspaper the censure of a documentary precedent of Pierre Carles, writes an article on the subject for the supplement Radio-télévision of the daily newspaper. Daniel Schneidermann, who works in the same service that his colleague, is moved near his superior Edwy Plenel, of a text which he undoubtedly considers laid out too well with regard to the author of Pas considering step taken , persona non grata on the small screen (including with Freeze frame ). The director of the drafting of the Monde accedes to the request of his chronicler media high-speed motorboat and repudiates Fabienne Darge. An extract of the article of the journalist nevertheless is evoked on January 27th, 1996 in number 123 of the magazine Télescope under the feather of Edgar Roskis, old collaborator with the Diplomatic Monde . .
