the life of the count de Mahony is like a sequence of dangerous combat, bold attacks, honourable retirements; it could be prevailed of the advantage of being left the one of the most former families of Ireland, but it wanted to make considerable by its personal merit (Bellerive - history of the campaigns of the duke of Vendôme - p235)
In Ireland
Daniel O' Mahony is resulting from an Irish noble family of the kingdom of Dermond. At the time of the Glorious Revolution in 1688, it remains faithful to the catholic king Jacques II. His/her brother, Dermod, as colonel, was distinguished with the battles from Boyne, Aughrim and Limerick (where some say that it was killed). One of its sons, Jeremy, which one announced in Holland, was lieutenant-colonel ordering the Régiment of Limerick of which to sir John FitzGerald was colonel owner. Daniel, having reached the row of Captain in Royal Irish Foot Guards, accompanied the national army towards the continent. Started from Rochester, it unloads in France, with Ambleteuse, the January 4th 1689, with the king Jacques II, and follows it to Saint Germain-in-Bush hammer.
With the service of France
Daniel becomes Major regiment of Limerick, then obtained a post of officer reformed in the regiment of Dillon. It is as a major of this regiment that it is illustrated with the battles of Casement bolt in 1702, gaining the nickname of Brave of Casement bolt . He is then made colonel, then Brigadier of the armies of the king. He is put at the head of the Irish Brigade. He passes in Spain in 1706 and where he has a regiment of dragons to his name (Mahony-Dragons). He takes part in the great battles of the War of succession of Spain: Alicante] and Carthagène in 1706, Almanza and Alcira in 1707. The same year, he is commander-in-chief of the Spanish armies in Sicily; its arrival made safe the possession of this island by the king of Spain and stopped Net the many conspiracies in favor of the emperor. Alcoy in 1708, Talavera in 1710. With the Battle of Almanza where it made astonishing actions with the head of the " Mahony-Dragons" , it was made Brigadier. With the Battle of Villaviciosa, gained by the marshal duke of Vendôme the December 12th 1710, and at the conclusion which Philippe V acquires the throne of Spain definitively, Daniel ordered " the dragons which held in side the line of the ennemi" (history of the campaigns of the duke of Vendôme p165). One finds it with Saragossa in 1710 where, with the head of the Spanish dragons, it collapsed in the Èbre the Portuguese cavalry and seized enemy artillery. It is also in Igualaga. It had been appointed lieutenant general, made Count by the king of Spain the November 9th 1706 and had received from Philippe V a commandery of the Ordre of Santiago.
