Daniel Handler

Daniel Handler (born on February 28th, 1970 with San Francisco) is a writer, scenario writer and American accordionist, better known of the general public under its occasional pseudonym, Lemony Snicket.

Biography

Born in San Franscico, it took part in the official choral society of its city and obtained its baccalaureat with the college Lowell High School. It obtained its diploma of higher learning at the Wesleyan university in 1992. He is currently married with the artist and graphic designer LISA Brown, whom he met at the university, and lives in a house of the victorien type in San Francisco. His/her Otto son was born in 2004. It is also an activist who militates (and helped to create) in LItPAC, a committee of political action supporting the Democratic party in the United States.

Daniel Handler regards itself as “touch-with-all” and produced his works under very diverse formats.

Books

Three of its novels were published in the United States. The first, The BASIC Eight , was rejected a long time by all the editors because of his sour tone and of the topics approached, supposed to describe a particularly dark vision of the daily newspaper of the teenagers. According to the author, this novel was rejected 37 times in all. This did not discourage Handler, which entêta on the contrary to land topics known as " désespérants" in a prose sinks in following works.

Watch your mouth , its second novel, was actually written before the publication of The BASIC Eight . It is actually about a book made for the setting in scene, since many scenes are written in dialogs of this kind, and are accompanied by didascalies and scenic annotations. According to its publisher, it would be about a " kind; of opera of the inceste" who would mix " judaïque mythology with turpitudes of the sexuality of aujourd'hui."

Its third novel, Adverbs , were published in April 2006. This collection of news wants to be like a exercise of definition of the love in all its forms, according to the told history: homosexuality, passion, affection, friendship, respect… The originality comes owing to the fact that each new has as a title an adverb, and is not interested as well in the finality or the origin of the actions as to the way in which they are expressed. According to the author, " the true miracle lies in the adverb: the way in which the chose." is done; With the breaking news, he works on a treating novel of pirates, or at least " of a pirate of modern times wishing at all prices to become a pirate of old the temps."

Lemony Snicket

Daniel Handler uses this pseudonym in the series of books for children which made the essence of its public success, the Disastrous Adventures of the Baudelaire Orphans. After the sales and poor criticisms of his first novels, its editor had advised to him to start to write for youth, finding in his literary universe a his style of writing a " potentiel." Handler refused initially categorically, arguing that it always had, even child, found this kind of books mièvre and uninteresting. It is what led it to create a kind of anti-tale of fairies, where the heroes, three exceptionally gifted orphans, do not cease enduring the most atrocious calamities whereas the " méchants" always end up gaining with each episode.

The first of the thirteen tome cheeses of the series was published in 1999: the narrator of the series, Lemony Snicket, appears in fact being one of the main characters of the intrigue, and has a clean personality. This investigator, of which " the sad duty is to report the horrible history of the orphans Baudelaire, " affirm being pursued by the police force, which obliges it to be made replace, at the time of all its public interventions, by its " trusty servant and assistant, " who is not other than Daniel Handler. This ambiguity played much in the promotion of the books: when he is interviewed in connection with the series, Handler " remplace" Lemony Snicket, just as for the shows organized at the time of the exit of the books. Music

Handler is also an achieved musician, and played of the accordion in various recordings. He also worked with Stephin Merritt, singer and type-setter of Magnetic Fields, on an unfinished musical comedy. Its collaboration with the group did not stop there since he worked on some their songs.

After its departure of the university, it belonged to two other groups, Edith Head Trio and Tzamboni, who did not meet success. He also played of the accordion with the musical group of Stephen Merritt, The Gothic Archies: those carried out thirteen songs on its successful series, the Disastrous Adventures of the Baudelaire Orphans, who are include in the audio version of the English books. These thirteen songs were gathered on CD accompanying the series, " The Tragic Treasury, " with a song of the group having carried them out.

Films

Handler also had its small success in catalog of films: he wrote the scenario of " Rick, " an adaptation of the opera of Made green " Rigoletto, " and " Kill the Poor, " adaptation of the novel of Joel Pink. The end result thus resembles much the general tone adopted in the narration of the books.
