Daniel Defert

Daniel Defert is militant an anti AIDS and the president-founder (1984-1991) of the first French association of fight against AIDS, ASSISTANCES. It created this association after the death of his companion, the philosopher Michel Foucault.

Scientific activities

Professor of Sociology to the University of Paris VIII, he was member of the Scientific committee for the social sciences of the International Conference on the AIDS (1986-94), member of the International commission on the AIDS of the the World Health Organization (1988-93), member of the National committee of the AIDS (1989-98) and the “High committee of the Public health” (since 1998).

He is the author of many articles in the field of the Public health. He was honoured with the title of Knight of the Légion of honor and received in 1998 the Prix Alexander Onassis for the creation of ASSISTANCES.

Life with Michel Foucault

Daniel Defert meets Michel Foucault whereas it is student of philosophy at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, and their hard relation of 1963 until the death of Foucault in 1984. They describe their relation like a “state of passion”.

It is with him with intiative of in February 1971 creation of the Groupe of information on the prisons.

It is the death of Foucault of the AIDS, a disease about which one at the time knew almost nothing, which decided Defert to enter the fight against AIDS.

It Co-published with François Ewald four volumes (republished today into two) of the Dits and writings of Michel Foucault (1994), a posthumous collection of the thought of the philosopher.
