Daniel D. Tompkins

Daniel D. Tomkins (June 21st 1774 - June 11th 1825) is a contractor, lawyer, member of the Congress, Gouverneur of New York and the sixth vice-president of the United States.

Biography

Tompkins is born in Fox Meadows (currently Scarsdale) in the State from New York. It is graduate of Columbia in 1795, studies the right and is allowed with the bar of New York in 1797.

Tompkins is member of the constitutional convention of the state in 1801, member of the assembly of state in 1803 and elected with the room of the representatives, but he resigns before the beginning of the mandate to sit at the supreme court of the state of New York, posts that he occupies of 1804 with 1807. He is Gouverneur of New York of 1807 with 1817. He refuses the station of Secretary of State which James Madison proposes to him and is elected vice-president on the ticket democrat-republican of 1816 with James Monroe as president. The same ticket being re-elected in 1820, it occupies the station of the March 4th 1817 with the March 3rd 1825.

In 1815 Tompkins established on the east coast of Staten Island a hamlet which will become the district of Tompkinsville. In the surroundings, it builds in 1817 a quay along the bank and provided a connection quotienne by ferry to vapor between Staten Island and Manhattan. Tompkins chairs the constitutional convention of the state of 1821. He dies in Tompkinsville three months after the end of his mandate of vice-president and is buried in New York.

Anecdotes

  • Certains testimonys says that the second first name of Daniel Tompkins was Decius. However, others think that the D is only one initial without significance which he added itself when he was student in Columbia to be distinguished from another Danier Tompkins
  • One told and a city of the state of New York bear its name, as well as the Tompkins Square Park of the East Village to New York.
  • In hardly more than three months, Tompkins was the vice-president deceased most quickly to die after fine its mandate.
