History
Pornichet was a truce (district) of Saint-Nazaire until the creation of the commune of Pornichet in 1900.The name of Pornichet comes from the fusion of " port" and " niché". The city bears the name of its main feature, a " port niché" in a bay. This port was localized in a étier, between the current port and the hippodrome, under the boulevard, in a situation comparable with the port of the Pouliguen.
In spite of many research, the first traces of Pornichet do not go up beyond the middle of the 19th century, time to which the exploitation and the trade of salt represented the main activity of the city with an about sixty paludiers. At the time, the marshes occupy 35 hectares of ground beside the dunes of Escoublac. However in 1810, a decree recommends the fixing of the dunes in the maritime departments. It was necessary to wait until 1845 and the repurchase of the dunes of Escoublac and Pornichet by Jacques Yves Berthaut, trader Nantes and creative of the Company of the Dunes, so that begins a plantation from pines in order to immobilize the dunes.
In the middle of half of the 19th century, Pornichet must face several challenges. On the one hand, the trade of salt is competed with by the increasing production of saline South, the saltworks are thus gradually abandoned. In addition, the port and the étier being badly drained, they ensablent themselves gradually. To avoid the insulation of Pornichet, Saint-Nazaire creates a way between the two cities in 1854 and built a bridge on the étier in 1855.
In 1870, Jacques Yves Berthaut resells in the form of allotments the dunes acquired in 1845.
In 1886, Pornichet counts 1.100 inhabitants the winter and nearly 4.000 the summer. The first post office is actually the casemate of the customs officers.
April 9th, 1900, Pornichet is, by decree, declared common with 1249 hectares and 1263 inhabitants. May 20th, the first mayor of Pornichet is elected, it is Charles Mercier. The town hall is initially installed in Saint-Sebastien. The same year, one launches the creation of the town hall, the market and class, post office building for the girls, for the boys finally of.
In 1907, Pornichet inaugurates its Hippodrome.
From 1913 to 1921, Pornichet does not profit any more a balneal activity because of the war but Saint-Nazaire being one of the main ports of allied unloading of the time, all the area constitutes a vast zone of garrison and rest for the soldiers.
In 1923, the pier and the shelter of the port are built. Starting from the crisis of 1929, the town of Pornichet sees its statute of town of tourism for children to be confirmed and from now on Pornichet makes use of this argument to be different of Baule. In 1931, the whole of the boulevard connecting Pornichet and La Baule is open.
During the Second world war, Pornichet sees the majority of its hotels and large villas requisitioned by the German army for various functions. In addition, the German army builds a thick cement wall which connects all the houses of the embankment between them. It is not possible any more to reach the beach in the civil car.
In 1946, the cement wall is destroyed as well as the majority of the Blockhaus.
As from 1952 and the end of the requisitions, buildings start to appear on the embankment. They have the advantage of being inexpensive and very functional for the time. The sea front in spite of that kept some villas, and knew to preserve a certain seal.
