Dance of living room

The dance of living room is a family of dances of company characterized by the training, generally leading to the competitions and the contests. The dances of living room are primarily dances of couples.

A dance of living room is danced on parquet floor (wooden floor) preferably. This parquet floor can be paraffin in order to facilitate the slip of the feet (allows in particular to decrease cramps of calf during the Valse).

Technique

The dance breaks up into:
  • a “basic step” which is only generated by the legs. This basic step is generally fixed on the music (3 times for the Valse, 2 times for the Paso doble, 8 for the lindy…)
  • of the movements of bodies, called “master keys” or “sequences”, guided by one of the dancers. These movements start over the first time of the basic step and are generally spread out over all its duration (but can sometimes overflow as in rock'n'roll)
  • a posture, a style adapted to the dance (toreador in paso, swing in lindy, spectacle in lifting rock'n'roll…)

A dance follows the music. Also one will be able to notice stops for some of them: the two dancers simultaneously stop dancing when there is a pause in the music). One will be able to also see the interpretation of the dancers, who communicate between them and with the music. Lastly, certain dancers often put application in the final ones to stop at the same time as the end of a piece.
