Dance of company

Form Danse of entertainment practiced in meeting, the dance of company is distinguished from the theatrical dance (scenic form) and from the traditional Danse by the public which composes it. On the other hand, certain dances can be common to the three kinds.

It is useful to distinguish, among the dances of company:

  • the Dance of ball, which in particular contributed to the repertory Folk (Valse, Polka, Scottish, Mazurka, etc)
  • the Danse of living room, which is regulated and is the subject of contest (Tango, Paso doble, etc)

Throughout the Middle Ages, and sometimes until the XIXe century, these dances were the subject of Censure S on behalf of the catholic clergy. Thus, in News-France, the catholic bishop François of Laval and its successors regularly prohibited the public meetings in the form of dances.
