Dampniat

Dampniat is a common French, located in the department of the Corrèze and the area the Limousin. Its inhabitants is called Dampniacois and Dampniacoises.

Origin of the name

Male name Latin Domenïus, Dominiacum, attraction of the occitan daN, lord (of dominus).
The origin would thus indicate the establishment of a Gallo-Roman villa, at least, of an agricultural domain (Dominiacum, the field of the Master). Daniaco, about 1022; Dampnac, about 1164-1174.

History

Dampniat is quoted at the 12th century for its " houses of recluses" , i.e. a convent of women depending on Aubazine. Parish annexed to the priory of Brive at the 14th century.

In addition to the Station of Aubazine (still in service), located on the commune of Saint-Hilaire-Peyroux, Dampniat had another railway station, the station of Bourret, located on the line Beaulieu - Aubazine, which functioned of 1912 with 1932.

The nave and the chorus (XIV century), frescos and the bell-tower (XVe century).
Remainders of the castle (XVe century).
