Damon Francis Knight (September 19th 1922 with Baker, Oregon - April 15th 2002 with Eugene, Oregon) is a writer, editor and Critique of Science-fiction and Fantasy states-unien.

Biography

Born in the Oregon, it leaves the family home at the 19 years age to go to New York, where he becomes member of the group The Futurians , in company, inter alia, of Isaac Asimov and Frederik Pohl. It publishes its first news, Resilience , in 1941.

With being recognized as author, it is initially famous like literary criticism. Its first criticism, published in a Fanzine, in connection with the novel Le Monde of Ā of A.E. van Vogt has a considerable impact on the novel and is often quoted like the most virulent criticism in the field (“Van Vogt is a Pygmy which uses a typewriter giant”). Van Vogt, far from of offusquer, predicted on the contrary with the young man, the reading of his style, a “brilliant literary career”. Knight will be able to thank some at the proper time by writing the Tree for time , Nouvelle of inspiration completely van vogtienne and wink of “pro”.

While waiting, he comments on other novels for many magazines and is generally regarded as the first critic of science fiction. Besides he receives a Prix Hugo in 1956 for a compilation of his criticisms.

Its first novel, Hell' S Pavement is published in 1955. In 1965, it off founds the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers America (SFWA), of which he is the first president until in 1967. He is also cofounder of the National Fantasy Fan Federation, of the Milford Writers' Conference (with Judith Merril and James Blish) and of the Clarion Writers Workshop .

In 1971, it writes a Biographie Charles Ford. However, its main activity will be the edition, in particular that of the Anthologie Orbit , of which more than 20 volumes were already published.

In 1994, the SFWA decrees to him the Grand Master Award to underline the whole of its work. With its death, this price is famous Damon Knight Memorial Large Master Award in its honor.

The general public knows in particular its work by the means of the televised series the Fourth Dimension , which bases one of its more famous episodes on the Nouvelle To Serve Man ( to serve the man , included in several anthologies).

He is the husband of Kate Wilhelm, also author of science fiction.
