Damiano Cunego

Damiano Cunego , born the September 19th 1981 with Cerro Veronese, close to Vérone, in Venezia is a professional racing cyclist Italy N. It measures 1m69 for 58kg. Very popular in Italy, he is seen as exceptionally gifted bicycle because he began cycling only at 16 years only, in 1997.

Biography

Damiano Cunego began the sport by the Hockey and the Football, before being distinguished in tests from race on foot (he was bronze medal with the Championships d´Italie in 1997). It begins cycling in 1997 and impresses as of its beginnings by gaining 16 success in the juniors category. He is in particular world champion in 1999 at his place, with Vérone, two years only after having begun cycling. He passes professional in 2002 in l´équipe Italian Saeco, in so much qu´équipier of Gilberto Simoni and Danilo Di Luca. For its first year pro, it gains several victories known as “open”, gathering professional and amateurs, of which the Tour of Appennins.

In 2004, c´est the revelation: gaining all d´abord the Grand Prix of Larciano, the Turn of Appennins and the Turn of Trentin, it s´impose with the general surprise in the Turn of Italy, gaining with the passage four stages. Cunego is then 22 years old, an immense future is announced to him. It finishes the season 2004 by beautiful a Tour of Spain, one 9th place with the championship of the world organized at his place in Vérone and a prestigious victory with the Tour of Lombardy. It is last number 1 UCI of l´histoire, in October 2004, before l instauration of the ProTour.

The Tour of Italy 2005 is a great disappointment. Cunego is taken down in mountain and is only classified 18th has Milan. It gains three successes all the same this year.

In 2006, after a good start of season, Cunego fails Giro again, taking the 4th place. It carries out in the tread a good Tour de France, finishing white shirt of better young person and 12th of general classification.

In 2007, again forming part of the favorites of Giro, it finishes 5th. Even if it is long in confirming the career qu´on predicted to him, it saves its season with a victory of prestige in the Tour of Lombardy, 3 years after its first success.

Since its victory in Giro 2004, a polemic s´est installed between him and its compatriot Gilberto Simoni, leader with the departure, and beaten by its own team-member. In 2005, Cunego is declared leader, but fails heavily, whereas Simoni takes the second place of the final classification.
