Daman and Diu

Daman and Diu is two old Portuguese counters gathered in order to form a territory of the Indian Union. Both are wedged in the Goujerat, Daman on the dry land, while Diu is an island with the mouth of a river. These two enclaves belonged to the territory of Goa of 1962 with 1987, date on which Goa reached the statute of State. Since them together form a territory.

History


L' island of Diu is famous, since the Bataille of Diu in 1509 between Portugal and a fleet made up of ships Othoman, Egyptian, Venetian, combined circumstance of the Sultan of Gujarat, Mahmoud Begada.

In 1514, Alfonso de Albuquerque, governor of the Portuguese India with Goa asked for to the sultan of Gujarat the right of build strong Portuguese on the island of Diu. The sultan did not give his agreement but offered to the Portuguese prestigious gifts, including one rhinoceros, of which the arrival in Europe the following year, largely marked the spirits.

In 1535, Bahadur Shah, Sultan of Gujarat, conclude a defensive alliance with the Portuguese against the emperor Moghol Humayun, and granted to the Portuguese the right to build a fortress and to establish a garrison known the island. This alliance grew blurred quickly, leaving room to several attempts to drive out Portuguese of the island between 1537 and 1546, who all failed. The fortress rebuilt by Dom Joao of Castro after the seat of 1545, is always existing. The island was occupied for the first by the army of the Indian Union on December 19th, 1961.
