Dam Mattmark
Rock-fill dam (ground) of the Vallée of Saas in the Were worth in Suisse brought into service in 1967.
On Monday, August 30 1965, with 17:15, a side of the Glacier of Allalin, in overhang on a cliff dominating Mattmark, crumbles on the building site of excavation of the stopping-dam in construction. Several hutments, canteen, workshops stores offices and hangars of repair are buried under two to three hundred and thousand m3 of ice, rocks and ground. The catastrophe makes 88 dead including 57 Italian seasonal workers and 23 Swiss workers.
One of the security issues of the stopping, is in the possibility of important risings in the valley of Saas. To solve it, the canton of Were worth thus invested in the installation of a free volume of stopping, by raising of two meters the water level as well as the crest gate of risings. That will make it possible to retain water with the source to limit the risks of flood.
