Dalida
Yolanda Gigliotti known as Dalida , born the January 17th 1933 with the Cairo in Egypt and deceased in the night of the 2 to the May 3rd 1987 with Paris, was a singer and an actress Italy, naturalized later French, of expression French E but also Italian and Arab. His/her father was first violin with the Opera of the Cairo. It is the only girl resulting from a family of three children.
Iolanda (francized in Yolanda) is born on January 17th, 1933 in Choubrah (suburb with the doors of Cairo), in Egypt, Calabrian parents originating in Serrastretta, in the province of Catanzaro.
Dalida gains Paris at the age of blackjack years in the hope to make career in the Cinéma, after having gained in Egypt some beauty contests, of which the title of “Miss Egypt 1954”, and turned in several B films. Quickly conscious owing to the fact that this thin luggage does not weigh anything with the eyes of the French producers, it is directed towards the song and begins with the Villa from Este, in a repertory with the Latin exoticism borrowed especially from Gloria Lasso.
Its beginnings in the song
In the search of new talents for its Variety, Bruno Coquatrix notices Dalida with the Villa of Este and the Gold Cloth (Parisian restaurant-cabarets). It suggests to him taking part in a contest for amateurs: “Numbers 1 of tomorrow”, organized with the Olympia. Are present Bruno Coquatrix, director of the places, Eddie Barclay, young producer of discs (which has just imported the Long-playing record of the United States in France), and Lucien Morisse, director of the programs of Europe 1. For the anecdote, its career was played the 421. Lucien Morisse wishing to attend the contest and Eddy Barclay wanting to go to the cinema. Lucien Morisse, subjugated by the beauty of Dalida, convenes it in his offices of the street François 1st a few days later, it quickly records his first 45 turns: Madonna , a French adaptation of a Portuguese title of Amália Rodrigues, Barco Negro . In front of this mitigated success and a second disc, the torrent , which were hardly more effective, Lucien Morisse thinks of having unearthed the title which will be the trademark of Dalida: Bambino , Guaglione into Neapolitan, which was planned for the high-speed motorboat in place, Gloria Lasso. It blocks the song and makes it record in one night. Result of the races: a song sold to 1/2 million 45 turns, more than one year with the hit-parade (according to Infodisc, n° 1 during 39 weeks) and first gold disc. Lucien Morisse invents bludgeoning, Bambino spends every hour to the antenna of Europe 1. On its impetus, Dalida divides, a few weeks later, the same scene of Olympia, in first part of the spectacle of Charles Aznavour, then in American Vedette of Gilbert Bécaud. It will be besides head of poster in Olympia into 1961,1964,1967,1971,1974,1977 and 1981.
Lucien Morisse, which will marry it thereafter (1961), takes his career in hand and in fact quickly an immense popular high-speed motorboat, thanks to successes like Bambino , which launches it in 1956, Like preceded , Gondolier , the Gipsies , Romantica , followed soon by the Children of Pirée , Ciao, ciao bambina , the Harlequin of Tolède , Itsi bitsi, small bikini , Garde me the last dance , the longest day , Amour, excuses to me , dance of Zorba , It Silenzio (Good evening my love) , the grids of my house , the time of the flowers , Zoum Zoum Zoum , etc
In 1969, Arnaud Desjardins makes him discover Eastern philosophy. She hesitates to stop her career. She finally decides to continue to sing but changes repertory and interprets With time of Léo Ferré and I am sick of Serge LAMA, as of the original “pearls” as He had just been 18 years old , Your wife , He rains on Brussels , Mourir on scene , etc She will not give up therefore very great popular successes following the example Darla dirladada , Parle low , Paroles Words (in duet with Alain Delon), Gigi Amoroso , I will await , Besame mucho , Femme is the night , Salama ya salama , Génération 78 , the lambeth walk , Laissez to dance to me, It is necessary to dance reggae , etc
A punctuated private life of dramas
However, in spite of this fabulous success, the singer is hardly happy in her private life. After a short connection with the actor and painter Jean Sobieski, father of Leelee Sobieski, at the beginning of the Years 1960, several dramas personal touch it full whip:
- 1967: commit suicide of Luigi Tenco, the new man of his life, during the Festival of Sanremo. Very affected by this death, Dalida will make, a few days later, an suicide attempt.
- 1970: commit suicide of Lucien Morisse, which was its manager during 5 years and her husband.
- 1983: commit suicide of Richard Chanfray, known as count of Saint-Germain, his companion during nine years.
- Pregnant of a Roman student, it will decide to fall through but the operation fails condemns not to have never again of child.
This crisis period corresponds to a change of orientation in its career. It widens its repertory with songs with text ( With time of Léo Ferré), obtains a world success with Gigi the amoroso and It had just been 18 years old , converts without complex and with an unexpected success with the disco music: the remake of I will await , in 1976, gains a great success. It turns then with talent in film of Youssef Chahine, the Sixth Day (1986) and plays even the driving ones of review, way Mistinguett, with the Sport hall (1980). Some time before the presidential election of 1981, it starts a connection with François Mitterrand (cf J. Pitchal, " Dalida, you called me little sister… "). A simple rumor, since their relation was only friendship. Remainder, Orlando, his/her brother, confirmed it during one of the emissions commemorative of the singer, within the framework of the 20th birthday of its disappearance: " Who had a relation with Mitterrand between Orlando and Dalida? " - Answer of Orlando: “Me, of course!”. This friendship was nevertheless worth with the President to be called by his detractors “Mimi Amoroso”. Dalida is nevertheless one of the artists who gave to Mitterrand his unconditional support for the presidential nomination. Support which, however, served it professionally and which caused, during a few years, the division of sound well many people which it will join together completely only after its death, even by extending it to the new generations which did not know it of alive sound.
Moreover, hiding more and more with difficulty the despair which lives it under the happiness expressed by its songs, it ends up committing suicide in its house of the street of Orchampt in the district of Montmartre, during the night of the 2 with the May 3rd 1987. It will leave a simple word “the life is unbearable, forgive for me me”. It will be buried with the Cimetière of Montmartre.
At the time of the 20th birthday of its death, in 2007, many homages are paid to him by the means of television and the publication of works, like Dalida, you called me little sister… of Jacqueline Pitchal, widow of Doctor Guy Pitchal, psychoanalyst and endocrinologist who followed Dalida a long time.
A star become myth
Since its disappearance, it became a true reference for the young generation of singers. It does not cease fascinating all the categories: the cinema, the songs (Charles Aznavour with “Of the Seine to the scene”) and even television with a mini-serial Dalida , in two parts, diffused in 2005 and carried out by Joyce Buñuel, with Sabrina Ferilli in the role titrate. With do the theater, Joseph Agostini and Caroline Sourrisseau write Dalida, what good is it to live in May? , an oneiric and surrealist imagination on the singer, played by Elsa Zadkine with the Workshops Theater of Montmartre in 2005.
A place bears also its name to Paris, not far from the street of Orchampt where it resided.
The festivities are numerous at the time of the 20th birthday of its death in May 2007. The town hall of the town of Paris devotes, in its walls, an exposure of images and sounds to point out the memory of this large singer, who was also one representing of the capital.
Dalida sold many individual and albums throughout the world, especially in France, but also in Italy, in Belgium, in Switzerland, in Germany, in Egypt, in Canada, in the Middle East, in Japan, etc According to Infodisc, for what looks at the French production of 1955 to our days, Dalida would have sold only nearly 11 million discs, while being one of the champions of the Hit-parade. On the other hand, we also have figures much higher: always for the same period, the world sales of the high-speed motorboat would be higher than 125 million (cf Daniel Lesueur, " The argus Dalida"). It was the first to receive a Disque of gold for Bambino (1956-1957), a Disque of platinum (1964) and a Disque of diamond (1981), created especially for it. Dalida received twice the World Oscar of the Success of the disc (in 1963 and 1974), as well as the Price of the Academy of the French Disc (1975: It had just been 18 years old ). Having refused, twice, an exclusive contract with the United States, which blocked its American career fatally, it obtained however a memorable ovation with the Carnegie Hall of New York in December 1978 (cf A. Gallimard - Orlando, " Dalida my amour" , p. 111; C. Daccache - I. Salmon, " Dalida" , pp. 106-07; as well as the majority of the biographies concerning the artist free-italo-Egyptian woman and mentioned in the " Bibliographie" of this article). With Edith Piaf, Dalida is without any doubt the French popular singer who marked the XXe century the most.
In 2007, Dalida has an influence so important that it unchains artistic creations, firstly a clip making it compete with the American singer Madonna goes until raising the question of plagiarism in the spectacle, the newspaper " Monde" the present one.
Comes then a project at the very least innovating: Reload-Process , indeed it proposes a “virtual rebirth” of the singer modelled in three dimensions. The simulation of the continuation of its career to the last style is also with the menu with the individual virtual ones like It viaggio dei sogni or Like it pond available to listening.
