Dalhem (in Walloon Dålem ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Liege to the Pays of Herve.

The common one counts at July 1st 2004 6.389 inhabitants (3 159 men and 3.230 women), for a surface of 36,03 km ².

History

The locality is founded in 1080 with the confluence of the Berwinne and the Bolland. The “old city” include/understand various monuments and dwellings: medieval ruins of the castle, houses of XVIe with XIXe S. the site was classified in 1978.

Under the Old Mode, the locality was the center of the Comté of Dalhem, under control of the Duché of the Brabant since 1239. The County was contiguous Duché of Limbourg, also belonging to the Brabant.

The territory will see its borders with various modified recoveries, following the wars of religion of the 16th century.

The Extremely of Aubin-Neufchâteau, work of the Belt strengthened of Liege in 1940, is on the territory of the commune.

In 1977, the entity of Dalhem is created, gathering around Dalhem, seven old villages. It initalement was initalement envisaged to amalgamate these eight villages with the town of Visé and to thus create a town of intermediate size between Liege and Maastricht, which could not be done following the refusal of several rural communes of the area dalhemoise to meet with Visé.

Etymology

Dalhem is a Germanic name of origin, which means dwelling of the valley . There exist localities besides called in the close relations areas of the Luxembourg and the Eiffel, in Germany. One of the districts of south-west Berlin, in particular sheltering the museum of ethnology of the city, also bears the name of Dalhem .

Since the communal elections of October 8th, 2006, the college échevinal (MR. + PS) east establishes as follows:
  • Burgomaster: Jean-Claude Dewez (MR.) Competences: Organizes, civil statue, worships, finances, personnel and cemeteries.

  • 1st alderman: Marie-Catherine Van Michel says Servant-Jansen (PS) Competences: Teaching, youth, early childhood.

  • 2nd alderman: Gregoire Dobbelstein (MR.) Competences: Work, agriculture, town planning, environment, co-operation.

  • 3rd alderman: Jean-Pierre Teheux (PS) Competences: Sports and tourism.

  • 4th alderman: ARIANE Polmans (MR.) Competences: Culture, social affairs, inheritance, leisures, middle-classes, houses of the young people.

The opposition counts 8 seats out of 17 and is made up of the political groups Cartel and Communal Revival.

Events

The International festival of Bandaged, organized by the reds of Dalhem, constitutes the principal event of the commune and the village of Dalhem. This festival expresses well the heat of living of which made to share the inhabitants of Wallonia and more precisely of the Pays of Herve. We will also note the presence of various and many secondhand trades and village f4etes which take part in the love of life of the commune.

Teaching

Primary school education is a responsibility which falls on the communes. To be done, the schools of the commune of Dalhem were formed in 3 school complexes per concern for organization.
