Biography
In November 1994, it takes part in its first official tournament. Going up little by little in the hierarchy, it reaches the division of the paid fighters (Sekitori) in May 1996. Its rise is rather fast, since it arrives in division queen (Makuuchi) hardly six months later, then becomes Komusubi in July 1997. In 1998, it is sekiwake, the third higher rank in sumo, which lets predict of a bright future in the sumo.
Until 2002, it remained thus between the ranks of Maegashira and Sekiwake. But, at the end of 2001, following two particularly successful tournaments, it is promoted with the rank of ôzeki. It gains even the Honbasho according to, which remains an exceptional fact in the modern history of the sumo.
Its career is then marked by nombreusses wounds, but Tochiazuma nevertheless manages to maintain its rank after a fashion. It gains its second Yusho in November 2003. However, in 2004, it ends up losing its rank of ôzeki following a serious wound with the shoulder: with two consecutive tournaments without any victory, it goes down again to the rank of sekiwake. It then should align ten victories in fifteen days if it wants to find its rank directly. In Nagoya Basho 2004, in spite of a shoulder not completely restored, it makes a success of this feat of ingenuity! But the chance is not side of Shiga Daisuke: as of the following tournament, its shoulder still not being restored, it cannot finish the honbasho. Idem with the following. Like a few months before, it loses its rank of ôzeki again, and must gain at least ten engagements to find its rank. Tochiazuma will carry out a score of 11-4 with the Hatsu Basho 2005, regaining its rank for the second time. Tochiazuma is the only fighter to have succeeded in regaining its rank of ôzeki twice. In that, it constitutes an exceptional fighter. It gains its third Yusho in January 2006, putting fine at very a long period of domination of Asashoryu, the 68e Yokozuna.
Tochiazuma measures 1 m 79 and weighs 155 kg. Its style is rather impressive although it remains in the basic techniques of the sumo.
The May 7th 2007, it announces the end of its career of fighter in the world of the sumo (intai) at the 31 years age, following health issues (Hypertension and risks Cerebral vascular accident).
