Daft Punk

Daft Punk is a French group of Electronic music originating in Paris. Credits since 1992, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Handbook of Homem Christo, the two members, combined with their sounds Techno/Electro of the tonalities Rock, Disco or Groove. One of the originalities of Daft Punk is the culture of their notoriety of anonymous independent artists, using masks and of costumes.

History of the group

Beginnings

The meeting of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Handbook of Homem Christo is done as of the year 1987 with the college Carnot with Paris.

In 1992, the two accomplices found an rock group, Darlin', with which they record their first individual on the Independent label English Duophonic . However success is not with go: the title is sold with approximately 1500 specimens and the group does not have almost any impact on the French scene. Thomas creates his own label, Roulé , on which it leaves very noticed Trax One Da Rocks . Is very connected for Daft Punk which make the first part of the Chemical Brothers with London. In France, they are located by the recording company Virgin; thus they make an appearance on compilation Sourcelab vol.2 of the label Source (which belongs to Virgin) with the title “Music”, in 1996. Source is consequently the first label to diffuse Daft Punk in France.

Homework

Following the exit of individual of “ Da Funk ”, the January 13rd 1997, Daft Punk leave the January 20th the same year their first album Homework . Success is extremely fast: 2 million specimens is sold in 35 countries different in space the 2 months. One finds there what makes the success of Daft Punk, a mixture of sounds of various and varied origins, House at the rates/rhythms Techno directly inspired by the scene of Chicago. The group acquires an international notoriety consequently, and starts its first world tour of 40 dates from October at December 1997. The spectacle is completely random there, the concert lasting sometimes up to 5 a.m.

More than one simple album of Electronic music, Homework reveals a multitude of facets. Emblématique of the french touch , it democratized the “filtered house”, and its sometimes random conditions of mixing influenced what criticisms will call “its Daft Punk”. The success of this album constituted an excellent springboard which made it possible other groups to appear, insufflating a new wind with the French and world electronic scene.

Discovery

In 2001, four years after the phenomenon Homework , they return with the album Discovery . At the same time encensé and criticized, it as well involves controversies at the fans of the first hour as in the journalists. Very directed pop even Disco music, the album is inspired largely by certain cultural references of the Années 1980. It leaves also an important place to the vocodées voices : Thomas and Guy-Handbook test themselves with the song on several titles. Business success is there still particularly with go. The group obtains two nominations with the Grammy Awards in 2001.

Human After All

The March 14th 2005 leaves the third album Daft Punk, Human After All . This one marks a turning in the career of both androïdes. Whereas the duet asserts by the title of the album ( Humains after all French ) its “humanity”, the album seems to evoke the escape of our company towards most complete dehumanization. Certain titles like Prime time off your life , Television rules the nation or Technologic , give off some keys of the concept of Human After All , that the two musicians refuse to comment on: “Our album speaks about itself” is their only declaration on this subject.

However, the album receives a contrasted reception and unchains once again criticisms of part of the fans who regret Homework . Some find it too repetitive, without innovation ( Robot Rock'n'roll is thus a simple resumption of the topic of the song Release The Beast of Breakwater) and without life (what contrasts insolitement with the title of the album) whereas others see it like a concept fabulous and innovative album.

Music Vol.1 1993-2005

In 2006, the group leaves its first best-of. In parallel, a round starts with dates in the United States (Festival Coachella on Saturday, April 29, 2006, in front of 35.000 people), in Belgium (festival Pukkelpop on Saturday, August 19, 2006), in Japan but also in France (the Eurockéennes of Belfort) Only 9 dates were planned for this round. The group occurs nested in a pyramid in the middle of the scene, equipped with costumes of robots, of surrounded by a dantesque light show.

Best off is available in two versions: CD and Deluxe.

  • CD consists of 11 titles extracted the 3 albums studio, of 3 remixes carried out by Daft Punk at the time of Homework, as well as a piece dated from the beginnings but new in album: Music.
  • the Deluxe edition gathers CD and a DVD containing twelve clips, including 2 news: Robot Rock'n'roll (Maximum Overdrive), and Precedes Time Of Your Life in only one box.

Daft Punk' S Electroma

At the time of the Cannes festival 2006, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Handbook of Homem Christo present to the public their first feature film (1h14), Daft Punk' S Electroma , which tells the search of humanity of two robots.

The commercial characteristic of this film is to be diffused only in one cinema in France, saturdays at midnight, and this during one year. More information on the official site of the Cinema of the Pantheon.

Live

Alive 2006 , dates of the round:

April 29th, 2006, Daft Punk give their first concert since 1998, in Coachella festival in the United States with titles remixés together by two or three.

June 30th, 2006, they occur again with the festival of Eurockéennes of Belfort, on the large scene, with 2 hours and half of the morning. They leave the scene later one hour twenty, the raised inch, bound for the public.

Alive 2007 , dates of the round:

It should be noted that Lives are held in a large pyramid supported by enormous steel grids.

CD containing the titles of live the east left on November 19th, 2007 and contains their performance with the General sports Palate from Paris-Bercy to Paris on June 14th, 2007. This disc names simply Alive 2007 , and also exists in edition " 2 CDs". One finds on the first disc live the " basic " , i.e. finishing by the medley Human After All/Superheroes/Rock' Roll , and on the second disc the recall which is an innovation of the round 2007. One finds also short a video of the passage of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger . This video was filmed by the public of live from New York, to which one had lent a certain number of numeric cameras. With final, 4 minutes of short periods of vidéos, filmed by the fans, with the manner of Beastie Boys.
