Daegu

Daegu (in Hangeul 대구) is a town of South Korea and the name of an administrative division high level Daegu Gwangyeoksi (in hangeul 대구광역시).

Geography

Daegu is located in a basin surrounded by montagnes : Palgong-san in north, Biseul-san in the south, hills of Gaya-san in the west and a series of smaller hills in the east.

The Geumho river runs along the septentrional and Eastern edges of the city, being thrown in the river of Nakdong in the west of the city.

Since it is located in a basin, Daegu profits from exceptionally hot temperatures for the pénisule Korea not hanging the summer. The mountains imprison the hot air and wet. In the same way, in winter, the cold air stagnates in the basin. The sector receives few precipitations except for the rainy period in June - July, and is sunny most of the year.

History

Daegu was the capital of the old province of Gyeongsang of 1392 until in 1896, and was the capital of Gyeongsang of North since the formation of this province in 1896.

In the Years 1980, Daegu obtained the statute of metropolitan city (Gwangyeoksi) in 1995. Daegu is more the big city in the area of the north of Gyeongsang.

During the dynasty of Josŏn, the city was the administrative, economic and cultural center of all the area of Gyeongsang, a role mainly taken now by Busan in Gyeongsang of the South.

War of Korea and post-war period

During the War of Korea, the engagements took place near along the river of Nakdong. Daegu was inside the perimeter of Busan, east remained however in possession of South Korea throughout the war.

After the war, the city lived a rapid growth, and the population multiplied by ten. Principal industries of Daegu are the textile, metals and the construction of machines. The quality of apples cultivated around Daegu east re-elected in all the East Asia. During the years 1970,1980, and 1990, the majority of gaining beauty contest Miss Korea came from Daegu.

The February 18th 2003, almost 200 people perished in an underground fire in Daegu, it was one of the most serious disasters of South Korea since the end of the war of Korea.
