Dacian

Dacien , in Latin Dacianus , Spanish Daciano , is a Roman proconsul, representing in the Iberian peninsula and in Aquitaine the emperors Dioclétien and Maximien, at the beginning of the 4th century.

Its real existence is documented little historically, but its name is quoted in many Légende S hagiographic, of which the gilded Légende of Jacques de Voragine.

With the wire of these accounts, Dacien becomes the prototype of the proconsul, or prefect, or governor, carrying out with zeal and cruelty the orders from Rome in the persecution of the Christians. One allots to him martyrdoms of many saints and holy of Spain, of the south of France and besides, all that in a very short amount of time, the years 303 and 304 corresponding to the great persecutions ordered by Dioclétien.

The diagram of the account is often the same one: the proconsul initially tries to persuade the saint to give up his belief, with the need with gifts, then it delivers it to the torturers with a large variety of torments, which the saint leaves miraculeusement unscathed (whereas torturers themselves, or the assistants, are victims of their explosive devices). These miracles bring the conversion of a great number of assistants, but not that of the proconsul. Finally it is a knife (sword, dagger, axe) which puts an end to the life of the saint. If the majority of these “prefects” have each one a victim (Quintien: holy Agathe, Olibrius: holy Marguerite, etc), Dacien, would have of it a great number with her credit to him.
