Daniel James White (September 21st 1946 - October 21st 1985) was supervisor ( Board Supervisor ) of San Francisco of 1977 in November 1978, when he resigned of his seat following financial problems. The November 27th 1978, White assassinates the mayor George Moscone and the supervisor and gay militant Harvey Milk with the town hall of San Francisco of several balls using its personal weapon.
DaN White was stopped and its lawsuit, which was held in 1979, is famous in the judiciary record American to have invented the “defense of Twinkie” ( Twinkie Defense ). The lawyers of White reflect ahead her domestic problems, which carried out according to them to the immoderate ingestion of food of nibbling ( junk food ). This defense was perceived by the public opinion as the invocation of an excessive consumption of sugar refineries to explain the irrational behavior of White (a Twinkie is a popular greediness in the United States).
The jury declared daN White involuntary culprit of Homicide instead of Meurtre with the first degree, in spite of the obvious premeditation of the assassinations, and White was condemned to nine years of prison. The gay community of San Francisco reacts violently to the advertisement of the verdict and of the riot S burst, in particular in the district of Civic Center. The police force severely repressed violences by what some denounced like a “invasion” of the pink Quartier of Castro, whose Harvey Milk was a legendary figure. This episode of the history of San Francisco is sadly indicated by White Nights Riots (“Riots of the sleepless nights”).
White spent five years to the prison of State de Soledad, and was aministié and given in freedom on January 6th, 1984. Fearing that it is victim of an act of revenge, the Californian administration pénitentaire relocated it with Los Angeles, where it spent one year under Parole. At the end of this year, White expressed her desire to return to San Francisco, which motivated the mayor Diane Feinstein to publish an official statement where she asked White not to return, that it was unaware of.
Of return to San Francisco, daN White had to face difficult conditions, in particular to raise an handicapped child born of marital visits during its imprisonment. Its marriage was dissolved and it fell down in the depression.
