DRIV 3R

DRIV 3R is a Video game developed by Reflections Software and published by Atari. It leaves on PlayStation 2 on June 22nd, 2004, on Xbox the same day, on Windows on March 18th, 2005 and in September 2005 on Game Boy Advance. The exit on GameCube was cancelled, as for that on Windows, it profits from no-claims bonus; a Making off and a additional level.

This play is the third episode of the series, having begun on PlayStation with Driver , having followed Driver 2 and continuing with Driver Parallel Lines .

Gameplay

The player incarnates Tanner, an American police officer who tries to infiltrate in a gang of robbers of cars, this thanks to his talents of driver. With this intention, it can steal and use any vehicle available, of the cars, the boats and the motor bikes.

With the manner of AWG 3 , it has a panoply of eight different firearms (what is an innovation compared to the preceding episodes) a revolver, a quiet gun, a magnum, a uzi, a machine-gun, a M16, a lance-grenade and a rifle with pump.

Because of these some points, the system PEGI described DRIV 3R like a play containing of the violent scenes and it disadvises it to the players of less than 16 years.

The action proceeds in three cities accurately represented: Miami, Nice and Istanbul. The geography is realistic, circulation is much less, the congestions do not exist.

An original point is to be noted, constantly the player can pass in mode “realizer”, and thus to record his parts and re-examine them by arranging the position of the cameras to his own way. Two special effects are available, the idle and the blur. The version on Xbox makes it possible to the players who subscribed to the service XBox Live , to exchange these vidéos.

Critical reception

With more than three million units sold in the world, DRIV 3R was a business success. However, the criticism of the specialized press was very negative at the exit of the play, reproaching him a universe too close to that of the AWG, giving up with the passage a little the identity of the series, taken again by Atari (directed before by Infogrammes). The version under Windows left one year later receives a reception even colder, the magazine Joystick goes even until putting a note of 1/10. The specialized site Gamekult.com puts 3/10 to him. Their disappointment comes owing to the fact that no improvement was developed in one year, but that in addition to new bugs appear.

The phases of play to foot as well as the gunfights also did not convince, not indicated like catastrophic by some. But by its universe typically Driver, in spite of a " AWG-isation" criticized and criticizable, this episode remains sympathetic nerve and particular thanks to its sound environment and its phases conveys some always also jouissives, in spite of missions (the mode “Undercover”) average.

The common positive point admitted by the press is the soundtrack, Jeuxvideo.com writes about it: “Impeccable as well in doubling as in the choice of the musics. ”

As for the version which left on Game Boy Advance, Jeuxvidéo.com while laughing in the test puts one to him 4/20, against honourable 13/20 on consoles and poor 8/20 good deserved on PC. Consoles + grants one to him exaggerated 16/20, and Jeuxvidéo Mag same the 13/20 as JV.com.

Anecdotes

  • In the original version, it is the actress Michelle Rodriguez who lends her voice to the character of Calita and Michael Madsen for the voice To tan. Iggy Pop and Mickey Rourke double also each one a character.
  • Atari, the developer of the play, parodied its competitor Rockstar (AWG): in each city, in mode Strolls, ten characters hide in the darkest recesses. It is about 'Timmy Vermicelli" , a grotesque caricature of the hero of AWG Vice City. A small well come no-claims bonus, and a small launched vicious peak with Rockstar.
