dEUS is a group of alternative Rock Belgian founded in Antwerp in 1989 by Tom Barman. It is one of the very first rock groups Belgian to have known a certain popularity with the international level.

The group is resulting from bubbling from Antwerp scene which wants that each musician who crosses form a group in the hour which follows. What explains the many changes of personnel endured by dEUS since his beginnings and the many groups which are related for him such as Zita Swoon, Dead Man Ray, KIS My Jazz, Vive the Festival or Evil Superstars

History

Worst Puts Scenario and In has Bar, Under The Sea

The first really stable formation of the group extends around the three creative strong personalities which are Tom Barman (song, guitar), Stef Kamil Carlens (low, song) and Rudy Trouvé (guitar, song) accompanied by Jules De Borgher to the battery and Klaas Janzoons to the violin. It is this formation which will leave first simple in 1993 heading Zea on the independent label BANG!, follow-up, one year later of the album Worst Puts Scenario (distributed by Island in Europe).

The style of this first album is a true kaleidoscope which defines obsessions of the group for the interminable jams, surrealism, the Jazz, the learnedly removed from rim Rock which could propose of the artists like Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Sonic Youth or the Velvet Underground, and a writing resolutely pop and melody. Individual the Suds & Soda builds around two notes of insane violin only summarizes with him these multiple influences and quickly becomes the title of the most known group. In front of such a panel, criticisms, particularly in the United Kingdom, will be disillusioned and in impossibility of defining the style of music offered by dEUS. Thus they will be cut off behind name " Art Rock'n'roll " who is far from satisfying, today still, Tom Barman. Nevertheless, a real passion is created for the group through the Europe or Worst Case Scenario is sold with 150.000 specimens.

In 1995, dEUS goes further in the experiments by proposing My Sister = My Clock, EP made up of only one beach including/understanding thirteen titles often cut in the middle of a front and connected to each other by Spanish and English dialogs. This single joining in its kind was initially proposed in limited edition, before seeing a more traditional exit in answer at the request of the public. A little later Rudy Trouvé decides to leave dEUS to be focused on its personal projects. It is replaced by the Scottish guitarist Craig Ward.

It is with this personnel that the second album was recorded, In has Bar, Under The Sea , which will leave in September 1996. The departure of Found can get along in the sound of the guitars, less opened with the distortion than on the first album, and in a tonality overall plus jazz and calm… but certainly not wiser. As a proof the far from academic Fell Off the Floor Man , has Shocking Lack Thereof or Theme From Turnpike , left like first simple, and profiting from a video signed Tom Barman, built like film credits, which lent to confusion and allowed him to be projected in the cinemas until the the United States before the projection of the Film Trainspotting. In has Bar, Under The Sea offered to the group another hit underground with Little Arithmetics , Pop-song starting in the calm one and finishing in a distortion (not) controlled.

In has Bar, Under The Sea also corresponds with the departure of Stef Kamil Carlens, left to deal full-time with its group Zita Swoon. It was replaced by Danny Mommens.

Ideal The Crash landing and Pocket Revolution

It is around the duet Barman-Ward that was recorded in Spain, the third album The Ideal Crash landing . Left in March 1999, this album marks a turning in the career of the group. More condensed (10 songs), giving up the experimental jams and pieces which could leave there, The Ideal Crash landing offers songs to the worked writing and the polished sound, between accoustic and keys electronic, and at the same time always very electric. Criticisms, this time, will be found there to accommodate the album like work more succeeded of the group. dEUS gains in popularity, especially in France (which had remained held vis-a-vis the first two albums), with the Portugal and in Belgium and with the Netherlands (where dEUS finds its public basic). However, dEUS remains in the category underground , and the sales of the album do not explode (more or less 150.000 specimens).

Following Ideal the round Crash landing, Tom Barman decides to put dEUS in stand-by in order to work with the realization of a film. It will be Any Way The Wind Blows which will leave in 2003 on the screens. One year later, dEUS returns with a new beater (Stefan Misseghers, in the past beater of Soulwax), new simple, If You Don' T Get What You Want , song rock'n'roll all in crescendo and a mini round which sees the group furrowing the festivals of Europe. This one will be curtailed when Craig Ward decides to then leave the group also in full recording of the new album. It will be followed soon by Danny Mommens. In prey with the doubt, Tom Barman, from now on only Master on board, hesitates with all to give up. He will be dissuaded from it by the arrival from the guitarist Mauro Pawlowski, former leader of the Evil Superstars, and the bass player Alan Gevaert. The recording thus begins again, and in September 2005, Pocket Revolution is finally in the vats of the record dealers. The album is of nature more " classique" (compared with the first tests of the group) and especially lets see Tom Barman alone with the orders. Pocket Revolution will not be less the largest business success of the group, offering to dEUS a platinum disc in Belgium (50 000 sales), three concerts sold out with the Ancienne Belgium of Brussels soon followed by two complete concerts to Forest National, ever seen for a Belgian group. Abroad, if the England were sulky its return, Pocket Revolution (contrary to The Ideal Crash landing ) was distributed to the the United States via V2 (without there being for all that commercial miracle to the support, dEUS playing over there in empty rooms with half) and the popularity of the group remained intact in Europe.

In October 2006, the last concert of the round was to be connected on a return of dEUS in their town of Antwerp. It with final was connected, on an idea of Tom Barman, with a series in concerts in favor of the tolerance and against the extreme line, which took seat on October 1st (that is to say one week before the communal elections) in four towns of Belgium (Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent and Charleroi). This event mobilized a hundred artists and more than 70.000 people. One week later, the Vlaams Belang, started from Extreme right-hand side, lost its place of first left in the town of Antwerp.

dEUS is currently in studio recording its fifth album.
