DCNS
DCNS (such is the name of the company since April 2007), heiress of the Direction of naval constructions of DGA, is a company of private law since June 2003. The French State is shareholder with 75%. It was a public administration before.
Presentation
The Management of naval constructions (DCN), created at the XVIIIème century was built-in the General delegation for the armament (DGA). Central management of a ministry, it was also an important industrial organization which during the centuries defined, built and maintained all the ships combat since the vessels of the King to the strategic nuclear Submarines and with the nuclear Door plane like much of ships sold with export. This double nature could not remain within the economic framework of the end of the XXème century. The decision to distinguish the official responsibilities for the industrial responsibilities was made and concluded in 1992. But it is only into 2002 that the industrial part was finally transformed into true company applying the decision of principle made by the government in 2001. The DGA preserved the official part of the old DCN. After the naval repurchase of the Thalès branch, DCN was transformed into DCNS.DCNS is the European expert of the military naval systems in all the fields (building of surface, underwater conventional and nuclear, system of combat, torpedes,…), so much for maintenance (maintenance in operational condition: MCO) that for the new buildings.
DCNS repurchased the branch " Systems navals" group Thalès and developed several foreign partnerships via its subsidiary companies. The company employs: 13300 people of which: 7000 workmen of state (the famous " apprentices of constructions navales") and: 6300 paid private law.
At the beginning of 2007, Thalès acquired 25% of the capital of the naval manufacturer, and thus names administrators. The operation was ratified by the Board of directors of DCN in December 2006.
DCNS sells its products with the French National marine, but also with the foreign navy for the traditional products with authorization of the Gouvernement French.
DCNS is signatory of the Pacte SME.
Sites of DCNS
DCNS has several sites through France:
Paris
In addition to the direction of the group, the head office gathers the whole of the staff managements, the transverse directions and operational divisions.
Brest
The site is in particular dedicated to maintains in operational condition (MCO) surface vessels and submarines nuclear launchers of machines (SNLE). It is also strongly implied in the Mer pole of competitiveness.
Cherbourg
See also: List of the submarines built in Cherbourg
The site of Cherbourg is mainly dedicated to the realization of submarines with nuclear propulsion (SNA, SNLE, conventional standard Scorpène).
The first military arsenal of Cherbourg founded in 1793, then was replaced in 1803 by a new arsenal, within the military port wanted by Napoleon. Specialized in the construction of the buildings of surface to veil, then to propellers, the establishment is devoted since 1898 to the construction of submarines.
The production to 70% is currently intended for National marine (standard SNLE " Triumphing It "), and to 30% in export (submarines with diesel-electric propulsion of type Scorpène).
The operational startup of the program of the submarines of Classe Barracuda is planned for 2008.
Indret
See also: Foundry of Indret,
DRUNK (business Links) the Propulsion with Indret is specialized in the design and the integration of the nuclear reactors of the submarines and buildings of surface. One of its axes of development relates to developments AIP (Independent Air Propulsion) and the éco design (reduction of consumption of energy for example).
Cofounder of pole of competitiveness EMC2 (Mechanical Units and Complex Composites), this also DRUNK important regional actor with his many suppliers and subcontractors, as well as partnerships such as research laboratories or universities (Polytechnic Nantes, Central School of Nantes, Naval college…)
In the beginning, foundry of guns, built in 1777 on decision of Sartine, it becomes royal manufacture of guns in 1781, then of steam engines for the Navy in 1828.
Within the framework of the policy gaullienne of French nuclear deterrence, Indret is devoted in the years 1960 to the nuclear propulsion, to provide the submarine to nuclear propulsion as well as the Porte-avions Charles de Gaulle
Lorient
The site is in load of the new buildings and the export of the buildings of surface of average tonnage as of the engineering which is distributed on the sites of Cherbourg, Brest and Mourillon. The Ingénierie part intervenes in term of design of the armed ships and the complex systems naval. It controls and carries out functional and physical integration sytèmes.
Toulon (bases naval)
The site is dedicated mainly to the maintenance in operational condition of the nuclear submarines of attack, the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and the buildings of surface.
Toulon (Mourillon)
The activity of the center relates mainly to high technologies and systems integration complexes. It is invested moreover in the digitalization of the battle field (sea-air-ground).
Saint-Tropez
The site is specialized in the study, the design, the realization and the maintenance of sytèmes of underwater weapons.
Lane-on-Touvre
The site is in charge with the design and the development of the equipment of the buildings of surface and the submarines (Automated system, system of launching of weapons SYLVER), handling of helicopter). DRUNK the naval Equipment of DCNS is also expert in the development of the systems of control. In the beginning, this DRUNK is a foundry, founded by Montalembert under the reign of Louis XIV. Its establishment on the commune of Lane-on-Touvre is due to the presence of the river the Touvre. Its temperature practically not varying all the year, the founders soak the guns to stop the fusion of the cast iron. The Foundry of Lane fed the Royal Arsenal of Rochefort out of gun, by the means of transport of the guns of DCN to the wearing of Angouleme, located on the edges of Charente. Today still each year " is organized; the road of the barrels and the canons" , generally in September.
