Dōkyō
Dōkyō (道鏡, 700 - 772) was a Buddhist monk of the sect Hossô-shû. Insofar as it had been born in the family Yuge, of the line of the Clan Mononobe, it was also known under the name of Yuge No Dōkyō . He was the brother of Yuge No Kiyoto.
Biography
Dōkyō was born in Wakaegun, in the Province of Kawachi (current the Yao, in the Préfecture of Osaka). In its youth, he becomes the disciple of the monk Gien, and learns the Sanskrit from Rōben. Moreover, the legend affirms that Dōkyō acquires mysterious fates of the Buddhism esoteric while being involved in a mountain of the Province of Yamato.In 761, it looks after the disease of the former empress Kōken, and thus gains the general respect. It acquires also a great influence on her. It operates so that she goes up on the throne, and in 764 she deposits the emperor Junnin and goes up on the throne under the name of Shōtoku.
Dōkyō is named Shosozu in 763. In 765, against the opinion of its ministers, Shōtoku promotes the monk under daijō daijin zenji , then with that of hō-ō the following year, which makes of him the theoretical heir to the throne and allows him to advance the political measurements based on Buddhist philosophy. However, he plots to secure the throne, arranging himself to receive sanctuary of the USA in the Province of Buzen a divine message informant that Dōkyō is intended to be the next emperor. Fujiwara No Momokawa ruins this plan by sending Wake No Kiyomaro to obtain a second divine message cancelling the first. Dōkyō then is assigned with residence, then banished in the Province of Shimotsuke with died of Shōtoku in 770. The April 7th 772, a report/ratio announcing its death arrives at the capital.
Because of the influence that Dōkyō had had on Shōtoku, the ministers declare then the women inapt to reign and decide that there could not any more be of reigning empress. The influence of the monks of Nara not ceasing however increasing, the emperor Kammu decides in 784 to move the capital.
A fall into a temple of Minamikawachi, in the Préfecture of Tochigi is supposed to be that of Dōkyō.
