Dúnedain
In the universe of fiction created by J.R.R. Tolkien, the Dúnedain (in Sindarin, “Men of the West”, in the singular Dúnadan ), are the Hommes which populated the island of Númenor, then their descendants emigrated in Ground of the Medium.
When the Guerre of the Great Anger ended, the Three Houses of the Men remained faithful to Valar accepted the latter the island of Númenor , located in the Large Sea between the Ground of the Medium at the east and Valinor at the west. Its inhabitants are named Númenóréens or Dúnedain (for those of the Earth of the Medium, they came from the West).
As it is told in the Akallabêth , Sauron poked at Númenóréens the thirst for immortality, which led to the loss of the island, which was absorbed in the seas. Certain “Faithful”, those of the island which had remained faithful to Eru Ilúvatar and had not requested Melkor, could escape and set sail towards the Earth of the Medium, where Elendil and its two sons founded the “kingdoms númenóréens in exile”, the Arnor in North (descendants of Isildur) and the Gondor in the south (descendants of his/her brother Anárion). Some Númenóréens having chu with king de Númenor but which survived cataclysm nevertheless are not called Dúnedain but Númenóréens Noirs (the Bouche of Sauron in is one).
Whereas the Gondor the line númenóréenne survived through the kings then their Surintendants, the Arnor was quickly divided and, at the time of the end of the Third Age, told in the Lord of the Rings , the descendants of Númenóréens in hot line (the Dúnedain of North) were not any more very numerous; they protect the local populations from the dangers without they not knowing it: with the eyes of the autochtones, Dúnedain are not very frequentable “Prowlers”, such Aragorn, called Large-Not by the men of Bree. But under this misleading appearance (“all that is gold does not shine, all those which wander are not lost” recalls the poem on Aragorn composed by Bilbon Sacquet), Aragorn is Dúnadan, a heir to the Kings of the Men who restored, to the Fourth Age, Arnor and Gondor.
