Dúnchad mac Conaing
Dúnchad mac Conaing or Dúnchad mac Dubhán Co-king of the Dalriada of 650 with 654.
The origin of this character who reigned jointly with Conall Crandomna is disputed:
-
Some estimate that it was Dunchad mac Dubhan mac Eugan mac Eoganan thus the back small son of Eòganán mac Gabrain (death in 595) the older brother of Áedan mac Gabrain.
-
Of others considers it, as Alfred P. Smyth on the basis of Senchus Fer n-Alban, like the son of Conaing mac Aedan dead drowned in 622, a son junior by very the Aedan mac Gabrain and than Dubhán is a diminutive nickname meaning " noirot " carried by his/her father.
The Duan Albanach names it simply Dúngall and a 10 years reign united with that of Conall grants to him
In any event its reign is related to the désatreuse situation in which the kingdom of Dariada following the death of Domnall Brecc was.
The Annales of Ulster inform us that Dúnchad mac Conaing, was killed in 654 with the battle of Strath Ethairt by the king of the Pictes Talorgan mac Enfret.
Dúnchad was in addition the father of Conall Cael mac Dúnchad killed in 681 and the grandfather of Fiannamail nepos Dúnchado i.e Fiannamail ua Dúnchada king of Dalriada killed in 700.
