Déné

The Déné S are an ethnos group of the north of the Canada, an Amerindian group of S which live the areas Arctique S of the Canada. Dene speak about the Langues athapascanes of the family Na-dené and were the first people to be established in what is now called the Territoires of the North-West.

Habitat

They live the grounds located at the north of the river Churchill, Manitoba, in the West the Hudson Bay. They are indicated as Dénés what means " gens". In north, they have for neighbors the Inuit S and in the south, the Cris.

Principal groups

Dene include/understand five principal groups:
  • Chipewyan (Denesuline), which lives in the east of the Big lake of the Slaves;
  • Tli Cho (Dogrib), which lives between the Big lake of the Slaves and the Big lake of the Bear;
  • Yellowknives (You atsaot' innate), which lived formerly in the north of the Big lake of the Slaves and is now incorporated in Chipewyan;
  • Slavey (Deh Gah Got' innate), which lives along the Fleuve Mackenzie (Deh Cho) in the south-west of the Big lake of the Slaves;
  • Sahtu (innate Sahtu' You), which includes/understands the people Locheux, Nahanni and Lac of the Bear in the south-west of the territories of the North-West.

These sub-groups of Dénés are also named Tchippewayans, the Slaves, the Side-of-dog, the Hares, the Beavers, the Knife-yellows, Sekanis and Nahanis.

Competition in the trade of the furs gave place to territorial arguments between Dénés, the Cries and Inuits.

Famous characters

  • Ethel Cableway-Andrew, Appointed E for the District of the Arctic Westerner (administrative division who covers the territories of the North-West).
  • the Canadian Televised series North off 60 took place among a Dene community.
